Jak, Dexter, Ratchet & Clank... what is the appeal?

I really like Jak 2 and Jak 3. Part of what I liked about them was the variety of tasks throughout the game. There are fighting levels, platforming levels, racing levels, flying levels, and the further you get, the more cool toys you get to play with. The hoverboard that you get part way into Jak 3 is incredibly satisfying. You can run around like normal, but if you want you can whip out the hoverboard and just cruise through terrain, hit jumps, ride rails etc.

For pure variety, both the Sly series and the Jak and Daxter series are probably better choices than Ratchet and Clank. I think the R&C games are all about doing one thing and doing it really well, which some people really appreciate. They're really all about using the most ludicrous weapons imaginable and creating pure carnage and hilarity with them

I've played all three games before. Sly Cooper is my absolute favorite, for reasons stated already. I was uninterested in Jak and Daxter, and Rachet and Clank are okay but nothing special IMO. Try Sly Cooper out. The third one is my favorite but playing them in order will make you appreciate them more. Plus they are pretty cheap now. I wouldn get J&D unless you really like 3D platforming and R&C unless you really like cartoony third person shooter action.
