These days? Forgetting about Cotton? Magical Chase? Sexy Parodius?

I think what's happening is that the genre is shrinking but the niches aren't. So Touhou and Otomedius are a much larger part of the genre.

But really, who cares what the avatar is as long as the gameplay is good.

Also, FWIW, I just call them "2D shooters" these days. Even someone totally naive to gaming lingo can figure out what that means.

Shooters have become a generic term for FPS but I have never, ever heard an FPS called a Shoot 'em Up or a shmup. That's just wrong.
