Disclaimer: Personally I'm not a typical collector of collections, in the sense that I will gather some stuff I like but I don't expect it to not get "reprinted" or appreciate in value.
For collectors for whom stuff like this matters, I think you should collect some "collectibles" that have history of being taken more serious. Videogames are quite bad to collect if you care / worry about reprints, remakes or whatever.
I don't know it the stereotypical coins or stamps examples are good examples though, as I am not a collector of that kind of stuff.
Also, if you expect your collection to appreciate in value you should consider other options that do not involve collecting but certainly offer better prospects for appreciating in value - in that I think it usually makes more sense to apply a portion of your money to financial applications expecting THAT part to keep up with inflation (or whatever) and then perhaps use what you got from the investments to collect stuff that are effectively losing you money (but you don't care as it's a hobby giving you other type of satisfaction).

Yes, I feel very good about Ninty printing a game. I'm splooging as we speak.
