I didn't say THE two top selling games on the Dreamcast, I said two of the top selling.

Unreal didn't really sell.. Quake III sold well.. Not many people had unreal tournament on DC... It sold more on PS2 and XboX,...

Yeah but only in the past 5 years has the FPS genre become AT ALL relevant on a major scale on consoles. And you know what? Yeah Quake, Unreal, Doom II online servers, etc. WERE massive on the PC. Half-Life probably tipped the scale, but even before HL, the FPS was a massive force in the PC community. It all but murdered the point-and-click adventure as far as mainstream titles.

I have to agree as far as consoles are concerned.. For people trying to argue about PC fps in the 90s, I'm looking more at consoles in that era which wasn't really popular at all.. In the 90s the FPS genre was indeed popular on the PC, but you could make the case that it was tops with RTS games.. Starcraft, Warcraft, C & C, TA and Civilization were popular titles.. While FPS is still popular on the PC, I think the console dual stick counterparts are outshining it so much, that most of the developers are designing their games to cater to consoles. Right now, I think MMOs are by far the most popular genre of games on the PC with FPS being left in the dust aside from the CS series... But on the consoles, FPS rule which is a shame because it's much better served on the PC with Mouse and KB.. Also on a major scale this generations FPS on consoles >>>>>>> 90s PC FPS in terms of overall relevance and popularity.. That's my point.. Back in the 90s Fighting games were massive on consoles and arcades similar to what FPS has become today..

IMO, this is rarely ever a good thing. Look at the avalanche of platformers on the NES. Look at Japan feeling the sting of overly complex RPGs. Look at how badly the fighting genre suffered ten years ago. The FPS crowd are going to eat themselves within another 5 years. I firmly believe this is why Zynga-style games are becoming more prevalent. They're an absolute alternative to the very, very dedicated FPS following. The same thing could happen to fighters. Hopefully not, but with SNK going down and Capcom pushing pretty hard it might meet resistance.

Everything in moderation. Pretty much the only safe genre is anything sports-related. That's cool. It's understandable too. Some of the first calculator-like games from the late 70's were sports oriented.

They were poorly received because they were poorly made.

Samurai Showdown Sen was average at best, and KOF XII while technically brilliant had a tiny cast of characters (I enjoyed the game quite a bit, but the lack of characters really made it suffer).

When it comes to fighters, SNK has always been second fiddle to Street Fighter. Their constant flood of average games could have been condensed into fewer outstanding games, and maybe they wouldn't be in the position they are today.

I don't think FPS games are going anywhere because they're extremely easy to make since you've got great pre-built engines to work with and they're easy money.
