As an 11 year old, I was too busy playing PS2, PS1, and PC to care about the original DS, until I got one ( :P ), so no hype there.

I'm really excited for the 3DS, but ill probably wait a bit to get one.

I am nowhere near as excited about the 3DS. Back when the DS was coming out I would SERIOUSLY draw or print, and then glue together paper systems and pretend to play them. I was really on that kind of crap. Now though, I have no intention of getting a 3DS for a very long while. There's so many good games I still have to play on the DS. I'm sure the 3D will be cool and everything, I just don't care about the next new tech thing (in this case 3D) like I used to.

I played my DS a bunch in High School, but once I got to college it spent about 3 years collecting dust. Just started playing it again, but nowadays I could get that system for less than half the price I paid. Also, I don't feel like getting punked by 3 hardware revisions again thankyouverymuch. I'll play my DS fat until the XL gets cheap and buy a 3DS when Nintendo releases the 4DS or something. Just wait, your Nintendogs will be able to pee on you.

In the comment section, the comic's writer wrote this:

I need to stop remembering these weird little things in webcomics.

I'm in the more excited group. However, I cannot shake my feelings of the 3DS's similarity to the Virtual boy. 3D portable system made to hold everyone else's excitement leading to the next Nintendo home console. Hopfully the 3DS will last longer and be better than the VB.

Well, I've played one. My opinion? Mixed. Certain games worked extremely well with the 3D effect, Kid Icarus, Legend of Zelda and Pilotwings Resort worked the best. They were extremely seamless and the 3D effect was very immersive. Ridge Racer is practically unplayable, the 3D effect is simply broken, it draws your eyes to the car and not the distance so you're constantly having to refocus on the vanishing point. The graphics are poor as well, which doesn't help. Avoid. Mercenaries sort of works, but the aliasing (or lack of) is quite detrimental to the 3D effect. The added depth did make things easier to shoot though. Super Street Fighter IV doesn't really gain anything from the 3D effect, it makes the backgrounds nice and the fighters are almost popping out of the screen during super/ultra combos. Personally, I'd rather just stick with the console version.

The AR games are interesting and a good use of the tech thanks to the stereoscopic camera. It's the most seamless implementation of this kind of AR based gameplay I've seen. Even better than Eyepet and that was pretty impressive. The 3D effect kills it stone dead though. Having to jerk the 3DS around to do things breaks the 3D effect every time so you're constantly refocusing. It gave me a headache and I had to turn the 3D effect off. I was expecting this though.

Biggest disappointment was MGS3: The Naked Sample. The 3D effect simply doesn't work. The titles where Snake is walking in and out of a 3D logo is impressive, it really does feel like he's walking towards you. The action simply moves too fast for the screen as far as I can tell and this ghosting is extremely jarring on the 3D effect. It looks fucking gorgeous in 2D mode though.

My favourite game was Kid Icarus though. Very impressive, looks gorgeous, plays fluidly (thanks to the amazing analogue stick) and the 3D effect is flawless. I never had issues with having to refocus on anything. It simply looked natural. The added depth really helps with aiming. Can't wait for that one.

I'll try to answer any questions you have about it.

Hmmm I guess it's about the same, but I was REALLY excited for the DS when it came out, and I had a whole binder filled with print outs from the internet for the DS such as screenshots and prototypes and store pages from places like Ebgames.com, and I didn't make a binder for the 3DS so...

@Niode

Thanks for the first impressions. What I find very interesting is how you said the 3D effect works well with Kid Icarus but not with Ridge Racer. I've heard people say the exact opposite thing.

Maybe it all depends on the person. Everyone's eyes are a little different so some games may work better for certain people.

They'll be demoing the 3DS next Saturday, in a mall which is a 40-50 minute metro ride from my house. Niode you think it's worth taking the 2 hour trip (back and forth) just to check it out? (tickets are not an issue, our trains are much cheaper than yours :lol: )

I'd do it. That way, in a 3DS nostalgia thread 15 years from now, you'll be able to say you went on a two hour trip just to see a 3DS.
