Re: Truly Scary Movies?
I always thought "Jacob's Ladder" was insanely creepy--especially the scene where Tim Robbins is being carted off into an insane asylum on acid. It pulled off the "Silent Hill" aesthetic more than a decade before Silent Hill did.

The Silent Hill games were directly inspired in part by Jacob's Ladder actually.
Re: Truly Scary Movies?
I really haven't seen a ton of horror films. I thought The Blair Witch Project was all-around just not a very good movie, and also didn't find it scary. I really enjoyed A Nightmare on Elm Street, but didn't find it scary. I also enjoyed the original Friday the 13th, but it mostly wasn't scary-- except for one particular bizarre scene at the very end. I think part of that has to do with my own discomfort in deep, open water.
I've never seen the American version, but the opening scenes of Ringu really creeped me out as well. The Descent was just a great movie all around, and the claustrophobia scenes were pretty effective, as I recall.

The american version is nearly identical, really. It's kinda 'americanized' of course and elaborates more on the girl's backstory, but it has a similar overall tone. I liked it at least.Limewater wrote: I've never seen the American version, but the opening scenes of Ringu really creeped me out as well..
The american sequel was holy shit awful though.

The Sphere really freaked me out when i saw it. Think of it this way their own imagination was the enemy not the sphere itself. That kept me up for hours after i watched it and i am not sure if i will dare to watch it again.
Also movies like Paranormal activity or just about any movie about a haunting of some sort i can't watch them at all. They just hit too close to home for me. I not only believe in stuff like that I've been through stuff like that.
Movies like Halloween or any of those silly slasher flicks i can watch them without blinking an eye movies like that only work if you live in a country where the fear of someone uninvited breaking into your house at night is something that could happen or is common.

I was surprised at how decent the American version was considering how disasterous US versions of other Asian films have turned out: One Missed Call, Pulse, Shutter...AppleQueso wrote:The american version is nearly identical, really. I grew up in a relgious household and the only film I was forbidden to watch was The Excorcist. I was always told about the "supposed" consiquences of watching it. I saw it at a friends house when I was around 13 years old. Scared the shit out of me. Ever since then, its always a hard one to watch.
