I ate to ruin this exchange between you and Mr. Popo, but did it ever occur to you that the reason Star Craft 2 was made into a three-parter was that it would be quicker to make three smaller games than to make one gigantic super-game?

They should have released it with 3 uncompleted campaigns or well resolved with a lot more to expand on later in future installments instead of a half finished game.

Look at Half Life for example. HL2, then episode I and II all at very cheap prices when released. Everyone was pleased and Valve got a lot of street cred for it. Are they going to charge you an arm and a leg for more of the story? no.

activisionblizzard is making each starcraft game a complete race storyline. it will the same length as all the other for the same price. Why would it be anything else? If each storyline is just as long.

Their intention: Put out SCII with Terran Campaign > Do the next race, take a year or two. > do the next race take a year or two. Since they do a year or two between installments then they treat them like brand new games for 60 each and not less than that. Who makes that much content and sells their content for half? not Activisionblizzard. They make so much content and put so much time inbetween for more cash. yes, maybe other reasons, more story? of course but thats to justify the length. All the gameplay mechanics are now out of the way and its pure profit time.

I'm actually curious how they got away with making a strategy game into a trilogy. Even if the story is worthwhile, campaigns usually run out of ideas by half way and become very repetitive. Warcraft 3 tried to fix this by having pretty different races with fewer missions, but I still got bored of each race half way.

I'm in favor of community members getting money for their creation, but I do believe paying them shouldn't be mandatory. Make every map come with a donation button or add ads and give the most popular map's creators some of the earnings.

I still think Valve is waaaaaay better at managing their community and making its members feel that Valve cares for them. Blizzard on the other hand has more of a Disney feel to it. Fake smiles, fake caring for family tradition and love and peace and crap, when to them every person is really a bunch of $

My friend, you speak so much truth. Honestly, if it was Mandatory. I would gladly donate to a map that I loved and was worth it. Pay for everyones map regardless of if it was good or not is not fair.

Yes, valve seems to me like they value me where as being an old school blizzard fan I kind of feel like i've been thrown under a bus.

Blizzard is the master of getting their fans excited with lots of drawn out promo for their products. I have nothing against them, but regardless they know how to sell their property and I WILL be playing Diablo III.

So the two complaints you have is you can no longer leech off your buddies (or have your buddies leech off you) and that they're releasing two expansions instead of one (and the two are at an unknown price point). SCII's campaign is as long as SC1's campaign but only has one race. The reason it's a trilogy is that there's three races (seems like simple math to me).
In case your not familiar, SC1 had all 3 race campaigns on one disc with a beautiful ending which was enhanced by Broodwars. You get an incomplete game forcing you to buy the 2 other games when they come out which will be just as long as the first installment calling for $60 each. There is no possibility of them being sold at 30 a piece. The disc clone isn't a huge thing but the lan is and the offline play is. There is no reason other than greed that they made it a trilogy. The other thing i remember too is that you buy premium maps on Battlenet now. Which is completely retarded. people put heart in soul into their SC1 maps and people promoted the crap out of them for free. If it was a good map, everyone knew about it. So now to play with people who have this map you need to fork over 2-3 dollars a map? What is that crap. Why do I need to pay more to enjoy the game? Since when did billyjoe in alabama become part of the dev team and I need to pay him for his time? its a community not a marketplace. This isn't Itunes.
1. Stop assuming it's going to be $60 each.
2. So by your logic all trilogies are bad. So you hate Star Wars, The Godfather Trilogy, and Mass Effect.
3. Please gain a basic understanding of networking before you spout ignorance about "no LAN". You can play SC2 on a LAN. You just need it to be an internet capable LAN, which can be done with a simple router. I do this with TF2 all the time, which is another game that needs to be connected to the internet if you want to use your unlocks (and you do).
4. You're really not going to buy a game because of the possibility of premium maps? (they aren't implemented yet) Couldn't you do something like, not buy them?

Not arguing or anything, but just want to say

1) If you think Activision isn't going to charge $60 each, you my friend, live in a world where Bobby Kotick isn't around.

2) Have you seen the Godfather 3?

Godfather 3 wasn't bad, it was just not as good as the first two.

I think it may be useful to distinguish the developers Blizzard and Blizzard North (if they still divide the devs that way) and the publisher Activision-Blizzard.

I think most of the props that Blizzard receives / used to receive was towards the developers of wonderful games. The major complaints in the last part of this thread are towards the publishing part (granted that it used to be done solely by Blizzard, but most likely not handled by the dev staff anyway).

Here's a thought

Westwood has made these games free to download.

Command and Conquer
Red Alert
and Tiberian Sun

But can the same be said for

Warcraft
Warcraft 2
Diablo

Games just as old as the ones above. Also bear in mind Westwood is part of EA a equally if not more hated publisher than activision. Also giving away these games might be just an advertising trick but still it's free stuff and i can guarantee that the original Warcraft will never be given away freely by Blizzard. If they do well thats gonna be a huge surprise.
