Just to play devil's advocate. It takes me precisely 10 seconds to put a brand new game into my 360, load the system up and hit A.General_Norris wrote:You have not installed any game in a very long time if you think that. Time it, because it doesn't take hours, 15 minutes at most.Call me a big fat stereotypical liar then, because this is one of the things thats always put me off PC gaming. Long Installs, complcated computer set-ups to play the latest games.
And the setups are automatic, you don't need to tweak anything. And even if you did, it's not hard.

I think that doesn't qualify as a valid argument.Niode wrote:

You seriously get through the 360 start screen, through the Xbox console screen, and to your game in 10 seconds? You're a lot faster than I am.Niode wrote: Just to play devil's advocate. It takes me precisely 10 seconds to put a brand new game into my 360, load the system up and hit A.
But to change gears for a second, if I install two games, I can do that on my PC to switch between them, whereas you'll have to shut yours down, remove the game from the console, and put in another game, and then go back through the load up and menu to play whatever it is. You could install the game to have it already on your 360, but then why would you be complaining about game installations.
Either way, both have their perks and their negatives.

I still dont see how going back to the xbox menu and ejecting the disc, then putting an new one in and pressing A is any longer than exiting a PC game back to windows and doing the same? And no long installs. You dont need to turn off any of the modern consoles to get back to the menu anyway. I suppose if the game works without the disc than thats very nice and all, but the few seconds I'd lose bothers me less than a 10 minute install.Ack wrote:You seriously get through the 360 start screen, through the Xbox console screen, and to your game in 10 seconds? Fair enough, you don't like PC gaming because of installs. I'm still going to go on enjoying myself with it.

I still find not liking PC gaming because of installs, to be quite a petty excuse. I can understand being bored of them, but don't tell me you can't do something to pass the time during the installation, like make a cup of coffee or go to the bathroom? (manuals always make good number 2 read material hahaha)
Also you only need to install once, plus the load times are always way faster on PC, so the time you spent installing the game, can be much less than the time spent waiting for the console version of the game to load (if it's a proper port, like the PS2 GTA games).
And last of all, if you spend 50 hours of your life playing a game, I think you can spend 10 minutes installing the game.
That is why I think people saying they don't game on PC because of having to install games are just console fanboys.
It's the same with PC gamers, who say they don't like consoles cause the gamepad doesn't offer enough options, and the games are simple children's games (unlike say a tactical shooter or a strategy game). It's a stupid fanboyish lie of course.

Guys just drop it, has anyone come up with a name yet for those PC-vs-console arguments? Sort of like gaming's Godwin's law.
I do prefer the convenince of consoles, and I install the games! I can rent all those short games and have them returned asap, but if 8th gen consoles require DRM activations I'll switch back to PCs no problem. Emulation is one key area that I love PCs for, and most console emu's don't require a fast GPU. But I digress because I don't want to fall for this Godwinian trap
The market is far too consolidated anyway, so those arguments are more like childish fiddles. DRM is my main worry, so if a game has it and hasn't been circumvented I simply ignore the game altogether. Sometimes I pop in the odd disc from 1993 and the thing will most likely spin no problem!

Yep, 10 seconds, I just filmed myself putting Just Cause 2 in (a brand new game to me). A further 14 seconds to get to the splash screen. I can upload the video if you like for proof?Ack wrote:You seriously get through the 360 start screen, through the Xbox console screen, and to your game in 10 seconds? Anyway, I game on both my Mac/PC and on consoles, but do a lot more gaming on consoles. I was just playing devils advocate.
Also, it is a valid argument since you factor in the convenience of consoles, and not having to wait for games to be installed is a major convenience. Just like it was a major convenience to have games on cartridges over CDs due to instant loading. Or instant scene skip in DVDs etc. Convenience is always a factor. You can't rule it out just because you disagree with it.

true, but I just don't see it as a valid reason to say "I never game on PC, installs suck".Niode wrote: Also, it is a valid argument since you factor in the convenience of consoles, and not having to wait for games to be installed is a major convenience. I know that you weren't talking about yourself, and I originally planned to say it in that post, but I was bored, I said I'll add the comment later, and forgot about it.
