Re: What's the cheapest way to get into Neo Geo?
As for me, I went with Neo Geo AES with unibios/stereo/component (an arm and a leg). Current games I have for it are Fatal Fury Special JP, Fatal Fury 2 JP, Art of Fighting 2 JP, Magician Lord, Blue's Journey, and Double Dragon JP.
I like the appeal of the AES Boxes and Carts, but you can get much the same effect with shock boxes and printed inserts for MVS games.
I think MVS is the best route if you could care less about aesthetics. Im gonn pick up a consolized MVS soon, since a converter is $250, might as well go $100 more for a consolized one. Not to mention these converters are not trouble free and do have problems playing the later playmore games.
As far as Neo Geo CD, a lot of the latter games for neo geo never came out on the neo geo cd like garou mark of the wolves and blazing star to name a few. Also coupled with the fact that animation frames have been cut. Superior sound though...
In any case, neo geo aes is a hard system to get into when mostly collectors are the ones who buy the games and are willing to overpay for anything (metal slug, pulstar, blazing star, last blade 2 etc)
I could see me buying maybe pulstar/garou for the aes, but how many rare games can one buy?

Guy did not have neo turf masters or Kizuna. He is small time.
What I meant by my post I guess is basically saying, pick up that rare game for that once in a blue moon saving up for thing. Im probably just gonna pick up the full mvs kit at half the price. Last pulstar went for $400. Not to mention the dick heads on ebay expect me to pay 150-300 for a mvs copy, might as well go for AES or wait on neo geo forums for a MVS one.
But the games that you would have to be crazy to buy AES would be metal slugs. Most people I see who buy them sell it a month later, damn casuals. Don't get me wrong, the game is relatively rare, but it has the earthbound following making it go over 9000 price.
But obligatory.

On EBAY, you can get Neo Geo AES's from Japan relatively cheap. I seems like if you factor in the $80+ shipping, the Japanese AESs are cheaper than buying it from somoene in USA. Is there any reason not to buy a version from Japan? I'm probably going to add the Unibios mod myself anyways.

If you add the Uni-bios, there will be no differences.
Just remember, Neo Geo games play based on your console region. That is what I love about the Uni-bios (other than cheats)
Only other thing is if you plan to use RGB, you want as low as a serial you can get. As they get higher, after a certain number, the RGB becomes worse.
