Curious, are you hapa, nikkei, non-JP Asian or...? My friend is 100% JP but doesn't speak it; whenever we hung out I had to translate for him... "eeee, gaijin ka?". His French is great though.
I do not have any Japanese blood, but of mixed Asian descent. After living there for almost a decade, there's gotta be at least one drop in me somewhere. Probably the honne/tatemae aspect of my personality came from there.
