So Jason Newstand killed two bands. Metallica, by joining and Flotsam and Jetsam by leaving. J/K I still love Flotsam, I just got their new album "Cold". Its no Doomsday for the Deceiver or No Place for Disgrace, but its good in its own right.glynnahab wrote:+1aaron wrote:imo, metallica hasn't been interesting since master of puppets.
This can be attributed to Cliff Burton's death, obviously. That guy was brilliant. The decline of Metallica shouldn't be attributed to Newsted, though. How can you put blame on a guy you can't even hear?
I love most genres of metal, though I don't like black metal. Symphonic minor scale metal doesn't do anything for me, either. I usually only enjoy consonance in metal when it's completely immersed in dissonance.

I don't think you can attribute it just to Cliff Burton. I mean, it was a great influence on the band, but they made Justice without him.glynnahab wrote:+1aaron wrote:imo, metallica hasn't been interesting since master of puppets.

Re: Favorite Heavy Metal Bands?
As far as Slayer goes, I COULD NOT STAND their "Reign in Blood" LP. I know most people have mentioned the following songs before in reviews I have read, but I only found the opening track 'Angel of Death' and the closing track 'Raining Blood' to be the only tunes worth listening to. The problem with that album is that every other song is ridiculously 1-2 minutes in length, and I am ashamed to admit this as a thrasher, but, none of the songs (other than the two I honorably mentioned) ever stick to my mind, not even for at least 5 minutes. I don't doubt Slayer's influence on thrash (I LOVED "Show No Mercy" and "Hell Awaits"), but I think Dark Angel did SO much better than them. "Time Does Not Heal" (by Dark Angel) is right up there among my most cherished thrash metal albums, alongside the likes of "Slaughter in the Vatican" (by Exhorder) and "Ignorance" (by Sacred Reich).
Anyone here into the NWOBHM as much as myself?

We... we should meet. Seriously. \m/pepharytheworm wrote:I approve of this thread. I really love Thrash Metal, bands like:
Slayer, Megadeth, Exodus, Anthrax, Overkill, Forbidden, Death Angel, Testament, Annihilator and Dark Angel
I recently saw Megadeth, Slayer, and Anthrax togther and it was awesome. If you guys can go to the Jager tour. Forbidden and Overkill are also touring togther so I am really excited.
I also like progressive, power, speed metal, and some death metal.
Death, Symphony X, Iced Earth, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Helloween, Cynic, Athiest, Exciter, King Diamond and Pestilence

Show No Mercy is my favorite Slayer album. While I like Reign in Blood, you are correct that most of the songs don't really stick out except for Angel of Death and the title track.
Re: Favorite Heavy Metal Bands?
Hmm, let's see, I like...
Gama Bomb
Bonded By Blood
Municipal Waste
Nuclear Assault
Korpiklaani
Amon Amarth
And then there are certain songs I enjoy by Testament, Kreator, Annihilator, Destruction, Skeletonwitch, Tankard, Primal Fear, Sodom, GWAR, Napalm Death, and many others.
Also, I like Austrian Death Machine, but that's kind of a joke.

That's pretty much how I felt about Reign in Blood as well. Everything just seemed to blend together with little staying stuck in my headsaturnfan wrote:Show No Mercy is my favorite Slayer album. On a sub-note, I am pretty surprised that most people have listed acctual metal bands. There have been so many times on other forums that I have made a metal thread and people list things like disturbed, under oath, korn, slipknot and various other "nu-metal" and 90's hard rock bands.
This probably has to do with the older age of the users here.

Well, at least we both agree that "Show No Mercy" is their finest! You gotta love that raw NWOBHM drive. Metallica's "Kill 'em All" is also their best, in my opinion.saturnfan wrote:Show No Mercy is my favorite Slayer album. You know what, man? I just turned 20! I never really had an interest for those bands you mentioned. But speaking of Disturbed and Slipknot, there were these two thrash metal bands that formed in the '80s decade that had those exact same names.saturnfan wrote:On a sub-note, I am pretty surprised that most people have listed acctual metal bands. Don't believe me? Here, check these links out:
http://metal-archives.com/band.php?id=102128 Slipknot (Crossover thrash)
http://metal-archives.com/band.php?id=42066 Disturbed (Thrash)
I have listened to both of these '80s thrash metal bands, and while I personally don't think either are up to par with my main faves, these two bands in my opinion still sound pretty effin' brutal, and are good enough to scare the living Hell out of a mallcore kid!
