I own a Weber kettle similar to King's, and I also use a chimney...also similar to Kings.
Propane (and propane accessories) are perfectly fine, but if I am grilling I am using lump charcoal. When I grill I have the luxury of time, so that has a lot to do with that.
Cooking with nothing but wood/smoke chips
Re: Cooking with nothing but wood/smoke chips
70 steaks sounds like a lot, but if you're using a large rectangular surface it's pretty easy to fit them. If you've ever been to a park that includes on-site grilling facilities you might have seen one of them; just a big rectangle that you can put coals in.CRTGAMER wrote:fastbilly1 wrote:We found a Weber Smokey Joe Silver in the shed at our house when we moved in, the previous owner said to keep it. So we use that occasionally. Soon I will be picking up the grill my grandfather made for his Labor Day parties. He designed it so he could cook seventy (70) steaks at once, so it is about six foot by three foot. And since we are going to start hosting pool parties/movie nights, well a big grill is needed. Both grills are charcoal based, but we could use wood chunks on the Weber, the big grill is just a tray made of metal with grills over it, no way to cover it.
I have wanted a Big Green Egg for years, their headquarters was around the corner from my church and the owner went to my grandfather as his doctor for many years. But the price is still out of what I can justify. However, at work my sales team is in a competition this month so I can win one, so here's hoping! My older brother has one and uses it weekly. It has dynamically changed how they cook.70 STEAKS AT ONCE?! Looking forward to a pic of this monster. Does anyone have a Big Green, curious what it looks like.
As for pics of a Big Green Egg, I assume you're looking for pics of it open and of the inside, since you can get pics of the exterior on their website easily.

For some odd reason I thought a member here bought a big green egg around this time last year, and I definitely remember being very jealous. Still don't think you can beat a Weber Grill, but hell if I would turn down what is basically a huge outdoor clay pot.

That might have been me, but it would have been two years ago, and probably in the "Smile" thread.Luke wrote:For some odd reason I thought a member here bought a big green egg around this time last year, and I definitely remember being very jealous. Yup. You didn't pay retail either did ya (the things I forget, the things I remember)?MrPopo wrote: That might have been me, but it would have been two years ago, and probably in the "Smile" thread.
All decent grills are way over priced, but if you have a knack with customer service one grill can last you a lifetime.

No, I definitely paid retail, but this thing's so solidly built that I'm not worried about having to replace it down the line.Luke wrote:Yup. I am a fan of Royal Oak Lump Charcoal.
Propane is for during the week(when I have less time avail) and winter grilling at my house, charcoal on the weekends.

BINGO. I will take a picture after it is setup, we just have to get the damn thing up here... Right now it is looking like a tossup of either the Nintendo VS cab or grill makes the trip up next. I honestly do not know which to grab.MrPopo wrote:70 steaks sounds like a lot, but if you're using a large rectangular surface it's pretty easy to fit them. Been thinking about getting a weber smoky mountain. They're kinda pricy though. Saw one at a thrift store, decent condition for $180. Might build an Ugly Drum Smoker.

For grilling I still just use the Weber. Turn it on for 5 minutes, throw a steak on, flip, and you've got a steak lunch in 10 minutes.

My GF's brother in law has a gas grill with a charcoal tray. Fire up the gas grill, throw on some hard wood charcoal, and it's the best of both worlds. More technology than I care to deal with though.
