I know I've said it before, but Deadly Towers. Legitimately by working up to good equipment. None of that Nintendo Power fully powered up code nonsense.

Any idea how many hours you sunk in to beating that game?

Games I'm proud I've beaten because they gave me such a hard time or because they're 100% completed..
NES:
Air Fortress (Complete)
A Boy and his Blob
Chip 'n' Dale (co-op)
Kirby's Adventure (100%)
Ninja Crusaders (co-op)
Tiny Toon Adventures
Trog (co-op)
SNES:
Super Mario Lost Levels
Genesis:
ToeJam & Earl: Panic on Funkotron (co-op)
Vectorman 1 & 2
TG16:
Bloody Wolf
Ninja Spirit
N64:
Super Mario 64 (120 Stars)
Wii:
New Super Mario Bros Wii (co-op - complete)
Super Mario Galaxy (121 stars with Mario and Luigi)

All the games that were beaten in co-op mode were with my girlfriend, and I believe they (especially ToeJam & Earl and NSMBW) and the fact we're still together are true testaments to our relationship, hahaha

Man, that was nearly 20 years ago. I made maps and did a lot of grinding for cash. Wouldn't surprise me if it was 20+ hours though as I only had about 8 NES games at the time and my C64 had passed into the 'old but not yet nostalgic again' phase. I have gotten the game again, though I haven't found my maps and I have too many other games vying for my attention to have a go right now. Maybe some weekend I'll pull out the graph paper and have a go though.

I would say for retro games it would be Super Mario Bros. on NES when I was a kid and it was one of my first video games and current games would be The Last Remnant. :)

Probably Hybrid Heaven since it was such a boring slog, and I'd been sitting on it for so many years. (I was writing a review of it, so I was determined to actually finish it first).

Or Okami. A great game, although I took ages to finally come around and complete it, and actually appreciate it.

Or the original Zelda and Super Mario Bros. Zelda was with use of a map, so not so good, but I think the difficulty of Mario Bros is often forgotten about. Game over and it's straight back to world 1-1, brah.

Okami sigh... I can't bear playing that game. It's like my eyes try to focus the image but never manage...

I still don't believe you.

However, in the hypothetical "what if" scenario where you had beaten the game, would you happen to recall how long that particular play took you and your character class and alignment?

I still have the report I copied and pasted from my terminal window when I beat it. I've attached it to this post. But to your questions directly, I was a lawful dwarvish archaeologist and spent 169609 turns in the dungeon. That's a *long* game, but as you can see I spent a lot of time blessing equipment, stacking bags of holding, pudding farming etc. Actually I kind of burned myself out after that. I got most of the way to an ascension kit on my next game and just quit, as it felt like I had done everything already.

I liked Archaeologists because they get the pick axe which helps you get to hidden rooms early in the game. Plus, you can use the same skill with the Dwarvish mattock which is the best non-enchanted weapon in the game. Also, being Dwarvish means you encounter more friendlys in the dwarvish mines which helps out a lot early on.

For some reason .txt isn't allowed, so I compressed it with 7zip.

Ghouls 'N' Ghosts: That game was a bitch. The second to last checkpoint in that game is bullshit. It took me forever to beat those three flying clouds at the same time. Once I got past that part winning was an ace in the hole.

Contra III on Hard difficulty: I would always choke when riding out of the base and Red Falcon attacks you in its final form. Finally beating this game was very satisfying.
