Japanese Punk, Hardcore, Crust, Metal, Noise etc...

Talk about just about anything else that is non-gaming here, but keep it clean

Also, aren't Crust and Hardcore part of the same genre?
*never listened to crust but has read about it*
They both fall under punk just like grindcore and sludge
When you say Sludge, do you mean bands like Acid Bath? I thought they were Metal.
When I talk about hardcore punk though I am usually carefully to call it hardcore punk instead of just hardcore.
I do that too. Mainly because people think I'm talking about Grindcore when I just say Hardcore.
If you just say hardcore then people think you are referring to stuff like Hatebreed, Madball, NYHC etc...I call that stuff basketball shorts hardcore. I hate that shit.
I never really liked any of that either.

I am not familiar with Acid Bath, I do not listen to a lot of sludge though. I am talking about stuff like Eyehategod. Hell, for all I know I guess it could be considered metal. I know it started by crossing early US hardcore punk with Black Sabbath so it certainly has influence from both.

I am not the best at determining what falls into what genre though. Sometimes it is hard for me to tell. I just use genre titles to try to make it easier to talk about specific bands or scenes.

To be honest a lot of sludge, doom metal and stoner metal all sounds the same to me.

Haven't heard of them, but damn that's a stupid name.

That's my thought on it. Sludge is like Thrash, Heavy Metal (or in this case Doom Metal) with a smidgen of Hardcore Punk.

I'm bad at determining genres, too. Here is my process:

Step 1: Listen to song
Step 2: Is this Thrash Metal?
If yes, process is complete, if no:
Step 3: What the hell is it?

It is kind of a dumb name for a band lol. You should check them out though, they are pretty badass and they are responsible for founding the genre.

I thought EHG was pretty well known,

My mom used to shit-talk Loudness because she saw them open for a Def Leppard concert and apparently they were really terrible.

Considering she went to a Def Lepard concert, I wouldn't take her opinion too seriously.

Nah, I don't. She listens to Korn and Linkin Park an awful lot too, so needless to say our tastes don't have a lot of overlap.

I have gotten her to enjoy Devin Townsend's solo material though, but that's about it.

If you've got any suggestions for Japanese bands in the veins of:

Post-Hardcore: Helmet, Quicksand, Jawbox, etc.

Space Rock: Smashing Pumpkins, Failure, codeseven, etc.

Prog-whatever: Deftones, Tool, Dredg, etc.

Trippy stuff with female vocalists: Bjork, Portishead, Sneaker Pimps, etc.

Let me know.
I was thinking about your request and I have something I think you should hear. It is not a Japanese band, they are from Portland Oregon. They are very good though and super...underground, unknown ...whatever, at this point.

The Prids

They have some EPs and some CDs out. Let me know what you think. They almost remind me of stuff like the Jesus and Mary Chain and Mazzy Star...sort of. With less feedback and distortion I guess.

Edit: Actualy this is more like post-punk which you didn't ask for but whatever.

Wow, sorry to grave-dig, but HOW DID I MISS THIS THREAD!?

At the moment I don't have any tangible goods to show for it, but I'm a massive connoisseur of Japanese punk, hardcore, noise, and thrash. The Stalin, The Comes, Gauze, GISM, SOB, Boredoms, Death Side, Lip Cream, Brain Death, Gudon, Confuse, Nightmare, Damnable Excite Zombies, Systematic Death, The Gaia, The SS, Melt-Banana, Exclaim, and Razors Edge are all big favorites of mine. At the moment I have my first Japanese vinyls, "Mushi" by The Stalin and "No Side" by The Comes coming in the mail, so I'll be sure to upload pictures when they come my way.

My buddy Ryan and I have a shmup-themed Noise project called "Sharon TATE Shootemup"

Ryan does amazing Noise stuff under the moniker "Black Steel Peacock"
Here's the boxset he put out last year, just under 70 hours of music:
