I was like you...I've always wanted to try the MGS series. I started on MGS4 and now I am working my way backward. I don't recommend this because it is very confusing.
The confusion is the best, not to mention most integral, part of MGS. Too bad the series has become too large a cash-cow, it's time to move on methinks.
I had only played the metal gear solid(ps1) demo back when it came out and I loved it. I hadn't played any of the installments in between until my friend bought MGS 3&4 and I tried out 3. I have never been so frustrated or confused at a game in my life. The fixed camera is terrible. The button to bring up iron sights is the same as shoot. The dialogue is worthy of suicide too. When you save the game they talk about Godzilla for 10 minutes. I immediately turned off the game and proceeded to play MGS4. The camera and gun controls were both fixed. The game was fun but all it did was make me want to play splinter cell.

You should play MGS3:Subsistence. That fixed many of the problems with MGS3's camera.
Of course, I enjoyed MGS3 thoroughly regardless. I'm pretty sure it's my favorite game on the PS2.
Different strokes for different folks, I guess. I've tried to play Splinter Cell a couple of times, and I can never play it for more than 15 minutes.
Just started playing PS2 KILL SWITCH. Heard Gears of War was inspired by it, only 5 bucks at Gamestop. I see a lot of influence from Metal Gear too, glue against the wall and peek around corner shooting. Interesting to include sneaking into a 3rd person shooter.
