I made the mistake of putting some (already well loved) pewter steins in the dishwasher and they got a bit more gray as well. I think I remember reading that aluminum or magnesium items aren't happy with dishwasher soap either. Might have to do with whatever makes it low suds.

Here's a top tip for dulled/greyed pans. Rhubarb. Seriously. Boil some rhubarb in your pan for about 20 minutes. Then pour it out. They come up looking like knew, I do this periodically for my steel and copper pans.
