Thanks for the compliment, didn't think I deserved a whole thread for it but I'm glad to know that I am greater than Microsoft.
Next time though, use my full username, don't want people confusing me with that computer company you know.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Linux operating system, Unix and other Unix-like computer operating systems are generally regarded as well-protected, though not immune from computer viruses. Linux does provide better protection compared to Microsoft Windows.
There has not yet been a widespread Linux malware threat of the type that Microsoft Windows software faces; this is commonly attributed to the malware's lack of root access and fast updates to most Linux vulnerabilities.
The number of malicious programs—including viruses, Trojans, and other threats—specifically written for Linux has been on the increase in recent years and more than doubled during 2005 from 422 to 863.
Any computer operating system is capable of getting a virus. Virus designers tend to focus on Windows since it's the most popular operating system in the world.
Thanks for the article.

From what I've seen, the chances of getting a virus on a Linux distro is slim to none compared to that of a computer running Windows. And there is debate in the reasoning behind why Windows is targeted more than any other O.S. out there. Just saying from experience that I've had to reformat Microsoft installs many times over compared to Linux installs. </troll>

Here's a funny anecdote. I do computer repair and maintenance at several county government offices. The county requires that all their computers have Norton AV. [Don't get me started on how awful Norton is.] Several offices use Macs, and sure enough the county requires that they run Norton AV too. I tried telling the county that they were wasting money, but it doesn't matter. It turns out that government offices are much better at wasting taxpayers' money than making informed decisions.
And yes, Norton does make an Antivirus for OSX.
link. As far as I can tell, all it does is waste system resources.

Wow. You gotta love people who think they are helping, but actually hurting.

probably because they were insulting to their future customers?
those ads were fanboy pandering, basically saying that a mac user is cool and pc users are lame. I'm sorry apple but you want to sell your computer to those lame people, and I don't know how many of them you can convince to buy one of your products just by making them feel bad about them selfs.

I hear you, I get a $600 Windows Laptop (a Dell Inspiron, with vista), and I find it odd that things like my anti-virus and windows automatic update make the computer run at %100 usage, without anything else running. Usually I just go on the internet un-protected, becasue honestly, its not like I do anyhitng other than go on silly forums.

Your anti virus software shouldn't slow down your computer. If it does, get a different program! For a while now I've been use the free version of AVG free and I find it works great, and it doesn't use a lot of resources at all (no CPU usage at idle and very little memory). Recently I added the freeware version of Malwarebytes into the mix because my teacher was raving about it. It seems like an awesome program, but the free version doesn't run in real time (you can scan manually with it). I've been thinking about buying the full version because these days you really should have an anti virus and anti malware scanner.
It's the sad truth though about PCs, too much malicious software out there that can really hurt you. Not just the kind that will fuck up your computer, but the kind that will steal your identity. It's fucked up, but it's not exactly PCs fault how many hackers code viruses/malware for Windows. But on the other hand, being that this IS the case, Microsoft should really step up and make their operating software more secure. Especially in this day of age, what with all the shit out there.
But anyways, BlackDS, sounds like your computer isn't set up good. I can care less for Mac vs PC debates at this point, but I don't like when things are confused. If I understand what you're saying, you're upset that you spend $600 on a laptop and it runs like shit. While, let's say, you could have bought a Mac book and it would be running great. But this isn't a reason why PCs suck, this is why Dell sucks. It's not the PC's fault that Dell set it up like a mook. Dell probably has a ton of bloatware on your laptop, and a ton of useless garbage running in the background which is wasting memory. You might consider going through your computer and uninstalling useless garbage that came on it, especially the software that's always running that you don't even use.
MS updates shouldn't bog down your computer, try seeing if you need to defrag your hard drive. Also, I would recommend setting auto updates to download but let you choose when to install. This way, you still get the updates but A) You can see what your getting and even choose to avoid certain updates (if they have no use for you) and B) Since you're choosing when to install them, they wont automatically install when you're in the middle of doing things.
And also, you really should be running some sort of anti virus software. Even if you only visit a few forums, you're still at risk. Check out AVG Free edition, as I said, it uses very little resources and I find that it gives you adequate protection.
But anyway, I'm kinda just rambling on. My point was that it sounds like Dell setup your computer like ass and THAT's why it may not run well. I wouldn't necessarily contribute this to why PCs aren't as good as Macs.
