I compare this to the "Gotta Have" mindset of a portable movie player consumer. Not only in the old GBA carts but the current crop of Media players. Great for a road trip, but watching video still best on a HD. Why would I burn my eyes out watching an epic movie on a 5 inch screen? Same goes for gaming, a portable powerhouse to play Modern Warfare? Big deal, again still better on the HD.

I think the only reason why Cell Phone portable gaming hasn't squashed DS/PSP is the gamepad. A touchscreen tradeoff. Cell slide out keyboard needs a decent D-Pad with marketing white cord hype of Apple. Once that happens cell phone portable gaming monopoly will take place.

EDIT
Thrown in a decent battery, and good library of jar-iPhone Aps game compatibility

Not this one, came out too soon,
wrong marketing, crappy games.

damn you must like to spend money.
I'll be lucky if i can afford just a 3ds when it comes out!

Well, a business analyst is predicting the 3DS to be priced in the $200~250 range, but from the comments below, everyone is betting against that.

What that in mind, I wonder if Sony will do a price cut for the PSP just before the shopping season, considering the impact what the 3DS will bring.

To be honest I can imagine Sony not even trying a PSP2.

The 3DS seems very poised to give anything that tries a heck of a beating - it has a really impressive line-up of launch titles with huge support from 3rd parties, going off the momentum that Nintendo got from the DS being the most successful handheld... ever perhaps?

Maybe Sony will just focus on the non-handheld market again.

Although it is also true that Sony with the PSP was the best contender (also ever?) for a nice slice of the handheld market...

If I recall correctly the DS has eclipsed the sales of the GB/GBP/GBC line, so yes. Most successful handheld ever.

They've definitely done the best against any of Nintendo's competitors. What helped is they didn't try to overreach with regards to the tech. The Game Gear suffered from a kind of bad screen and horrid battery life because they tried to do color too early. The PSP's big failure is trying to target a market that doesn't exist.

This is why Sony has to rethink its strategy for the handhelds.

The DS has basically reached out to all generations of gamers, older folks playing Tetris, Sudoku, crosswords, Brain Age; while kids playing Pokemon!
And to be honest I was glad that the DS started off as the 3rd pillar of Nintendo, becoming more than the later GB family could do for Nintendo. (GB -> GBC -> GBA vs DS -> 3DS, DSi is nothing!)

Well, the PSP failed short on its goals for being the handheld that can do everything (games + movie + music + internet...), without a really defined core market (a Hannah Montana and God of War bundle!)

I wouldn't call the PSP a failure, sony has it wasn't a complete failure. However, I wouldn't doubt if Sony gave the PSP2 two screens. Imagine a similar form factor as the 3000, but the top screen would slide up like the Go, to reveal a touch screen. And of course 2 nubs. I would see the PSP having no UMD Slot, but 2 memory stick slots. One for a game, the other for a memory card.

I predict that the PSP2 will not have a second nub.

I predict that it won't be called the PSP2. It will be called the PlayCast and will be a joint venture between Sony and Sega. Shenmue 3 will be a launch title, and an exclusive, along with a new 2D Sonic and a new property by Team ICO. And you won't have to do anything shifty to play bootleg games or use non-proprietary memory cards.

And it will only have one nub.

I'm only about 80% sure on this prediction, though, so a couple of minor things might not be quite right.
Systems: TI-99/4a, Commodore Vic-20, Atari 2600, NES, SMS, GB, Neo Geo MVS (Big Red 4-slot), Genesis, SNES, 3DO, PS1, N64, DC, PS2, GBA, GCN, NDSi, Wii
