This is exactly what I thought that Brootal Legend was going to be. What a disappointment.J T wrote:I'd like to see more rhythm games that aren't necessarily about playing gigs in a band. I like the games like Parappa the Rapper, Space Channel 5, or Rez that are rhythm based, but try to do something unusual and fantastical with their musical aspect.
I would love to see an over-the-top metal game about going to the crossroads to battle Satan in a guitar shredding battle. I imagine an RPG adventure where you battle through music duels to work your way into a battle with the devil himself. Lots of heavy metal cliches, led zeppelin references, that sort of thing. The degree to which you rock kills demons.

So would people who use Game Boys and C64s and their various trackers (ie. Goat Tracker and FamiTracker) to create music not be musicians? How about Stomp? I'm not trying to be a prick, I'm just interested in your statement.Niode wrote:Likewise, you can't be classed as a musician if you can't actually play an instrument.
Same here. I was also disappointed that there was (from my recollection) no regular Death Metal. I mean, it's called Brütal Legends. It even has an umlaut.Niode wrote: This is exactly what I thought that Brootal Legend was going to be. What a disappointment.

Unless you can read/write music in a classical sense then you can't be classed as a musician.GSZX1337 wrote:So would people who use Game Boys and C64s and their various trackers (ie. Many of the legends of jazz music would like to have a word with you.Niode wrote:Unless you can read/write music in a classical sense then you can't be classed as a musician.

Yeah, that's what I thought it was going to be too. That's where I got the idea.Niode wrote: This is exactly what I thought that Brootal Legend was going to be. What a disappointment.

Re: Guitar Games
I think all these FPS are shite. How about just killing real people?bobbynewmarkiii wrote:I think all these games are shite. How about just learning to play an instrument?
I mean, if you can't respect what other people like I wonder what you are doing here.
The Drummania pad is a Yamaha drum and the notes are exact reproductions of the songs at higher levels. The same applies to Keyboardmania, at least until you get to the Another level where songs are even harder. Also, the drumming in both Drummania and Rock Band is pretty damn similar to the real thing. A lot of people actually use electronic drum kits (DTXplorer is a popular choice) for Drummania.
But you don't get all those things that suck about playing an instrument like learning for years just to be able to play a single sound.I just find rhythm games totally boring... It's like music lite. You just don't get so many of the important features of what makes music what it is.
And more importantly, if you don't care about those "important features" there's no reason to play an instrument. I don't care about pitch, I don't care about creating my own music. I just care about the fun of mashing buttons really fast in a delicate corepgraphy that requires skill. It's not different than playing a plataformer or run'n'gun.
Nobody is arguing that rhythm games are better than playing an instrument or that you can use them as instruments. It's different.
Because using music the people may like is bad. Also this is only true of GH and RB, the Konami games have home-made music that can't be considered "pedestrian chart drivel".For four - the tracks these games choose are always utterly pedestrian chart drivel.
I mean, what fun is the average Joe going to have if you force him to play songs he doesn't like?
I'm the first one who thinks GH and RB have a hardly passable soundtrack with just a couple of songs I would like and more often than not ruined with a bad notechart (Knights of Cydonia I'm looking at you). But this is not really an argument.
@Crux
Well, the reason why Beatmania is hard for begginers is because it has 8 buttons. Comparing it to the 88 keys of a normal piano it's far more accesible.
Also the notecharts allow you to play songs beyond your skill level while playing only slow songs on a piano is boring when you want to play Mendes.
Beatmania is incredibly hard to master and given a reasonable play time it will take you a couple of years to beat everything but given the same time frame you will not get a sizable skill in playing piano.
Also consider that you will play Beatmania alone or with your addicted friends while you have a teacher in the piano case. Also how fast you improve in Rhythm games is mainly a matter of how hard you push the envelope.
Otherwise, I love Beatmania because I can play this without taking a lifetime (or 88 fingers) to do it:
25 notes per second baby! You haven't played music until you have played every single note in a song on all the instruments
Beatmania IIDX is probably the hardest game in existence but I don't think it compares to playing it's songs on a keyboard.

Actually, I once saw a guy playing a Guitar Hero controller that was modded to send MIDI messages. It was pretty cool. He even had it rigged to lay on some crazy effects when he tilted the guitar.General_Norris wrote:

Rereading that quote it doesn't seem to transmit my idea. Let¡s change it to "efficient" instruments because I have seen some people using videogame controllers, DK bongos, GH guitars and other stuff to play music tooJ T wrote:Actually, I once saw a guy playing a Guitar Hero controller that was modded to send MIDI messages.
