I remember when Xbox 360 games were 59.99, now they're 69.99+. I didn't know they went up in price until I bought Mass Effect 2. It's actually ridiculous.

Don't know what's up with that, they haven't gone up in the US. And Canadian money's worth more, at that.darthmunky wrote:I remember when Xbox 360 games were 59.99, now they're 69.99+. I didn't know they went up in price until I bought Mass Effect 2. It's actually ridiculous.

[quote="DonSilvestre"]Maybe at some point game companies will all go bananas releasing digital copies of games and that will drive the value down - otherwise I kind of doubt that video game market value will "crash" anytime soon. Maybe for the super rare games - but it's different with games. Particularly with games that were released in extremely limited quantities.
For one - a game is an all out experience as opposed to a picture on a card, or a quick story with some pictures like comics. Games can be considered on the same level of movies and books as far as I'm concerned. When there's less than 30,000 copies of PDS out there - and many fewer than that in mint condition, the experience of playing that game becomes a lot more valuable than a simple picture of a famous baseball player. [quote="DonSilvestre"]
I disagree, if there are collectors picking up games such as Radiant Silvergun and Panzer Dragoon saga just for the sake of collecting then they are driving up the prices of the game. (By creating more demand). Comic books can also be considered an "experience". Mark my words. Baseball and comic books all over again.

I see your point - but like i said in my earlier post - there are a select few rare titles that jump up in price like that - but for the most part games depreciate in value. I don't think it's really possible for the games market to "crash" when for 99% of games out there the absolute MAX you'll pay to acquire the game is what it cost new to begin with.env963

I mean - assume the game collecting market crashes...what will the difference be? Panzer Dragoon Saga is now only worth 50 bucks? What about all the other rare to semi rare games that currently sell for 15 - 30 bucks? If these games are still desirable to play, and they originally sold for between 40 - 70 bucks depending on the system, I just don't see a "crash" where all of a sudden these games are worthless.
The game collecting community is NOWHERE near where the comic and sports card collecting communities ever were, and it's likely to stay that way. Cards were goofy to begin with: you buy a pack of cards for $5.00 and then hope to acquire a rare card with some arbitrary value assigned to it of a good player. You could supposedly pay $5.00 and end up with a card worth $100. Who came up with these values? It never really seemed like the market dictated card value - it seemed like the folks at Beckett just knew how rare a card was and would assign it a value based on that. I feel your pain because I used to be huge into sports cards.
I think you're overstating the amount of people who are honestly only collecting games as some form of "investment." There seriously are not that many of these people around. There's a couple crazies who are paying thousands for rare boxed games - but the amount of games out there that are ridiculously valuable is a lot smaller than the amount of cards and comics that were supposedly worth a bazillion dollars.
You could be right though - but that's why PDS is the only "investment" game I've ever bought. Even there - I truly wanted to play it as well.

Re: anybody else notice game prices lately?
From my experience buying Japanese retro games over the past few years, the prices have definitely gone up. Games that would normally sell for around $1 to $3 are now selling for three times that. I used to buy tons of games for just a few bucks each and it was awesome. But lately, I almost always get outbid and the games end up selling for a lot more. Even though the economy has taken a large hit, the prices have gone up considerably. I wouldn't doubt that the news about Stadium Events and Air Raid is partially to blame but also retro re-releases such as the Virtual Console and retro style games such as Rockman 9 & 10 have likely renewed interest in retro games.
