Niode, Out of curiosity, what did you use the "OtherOS" for on your PS3? I haven't updated yet, so perhaps if you are using it in a way that I've not heard of it would be worthwhile to try it out...Niode wrote:

I use it with Zerogame Project. It's essentially a Maximus Arcade style front end for Wahcade and various other PS3 optimised emulators. I can play Mega Drive, SNES, early arcade games, GBA, GB and a bunch of other systems too. It works with the wireless controllers too. It's easily the best thing about the Linux option on PS3.enderfall wrote:Niode, Out of curiosity, what did you use the "OtherOS" for on your PS3? I can see why you are upset at that point. I never thought about running emulators on the PS3. I usually just do that on my computer, but hearing that the wireless controller works with it is pretty cool. Damn. I may just have to buy a fucking slim....
Re: Sony removing OtherOS feature in 3.21 PS3 update
You use all the features of your PS3 while I only use one. You're pissed (and rightly so) that they're going to take away one of the features you use. I'm indifferent because they're taking away a feature I don't use. I'm not going to inconvenience myself in order to stand on principle.Niode wrote:That's the thing MrPopo, I want to play games on my PS3 too, but Sony aren't giving me a choice. I want to be able to play all my retro stuff on the PS3 from the comfort of my sofa with wireless controllers. I will not be forced into doing something I don't want to do. The 'options' Sony have given me are unacceptable. So I'm forced to break the law to continue using MY hardware in a way I paid for. That is what I am totally unhappy with. It doesn't matter what features have been removed, that's my point, it's the fact that Sony are removing these features and people are just bending over and taking it like it's nothing, that is what has upset me so much. It makes me feel like I'm being held ransom for supporting this damn company.MrPopo wrote:To be fair, how many companies have even been in a position to do so?Niode wrote:No other company has removed such useful features from hardware in such a heavy handed way, and if they keep getting away with it they're going to keep doing it.
Niode, I really do sympathize with your point of view. But I'm just more pragmatic about the whole thing. If they removed in a software update the ability for me to play DVD Movies in my PS3 I still wouldn't be pissed; I don't use that feature, so I don't give a damn. All I need my PS3 to do is play PS3 games. That's what I purchased it for, and as long as it keeps allowing me to play games then I'm happy.
Now, if they have a fairly reliable exploit that'll fix this out before I turn on my PS3 again (and it might be some time before that happens, as I'm focusing on other systems at the moment) then I'll probably use the exploit, just in case someone finds a use for OtherOS that I'd want to use.

There's no Linux on the Slim. You'd have to buy an older 'fat' model. The Zerogame project really is cool, and it's a piece of cake to set up. The only requirement right now is that you need to have a keyboard plugged in (the script essentially maps the inputs from the controller as keyboard presses, he's not developed a layer that does not require it yet) but I just have a wireless keyboard/mouse dongle plugged in, I don't even need to have the keyboard switched on since Linux only needs to see a keyboard on the system. Once it's all set up I simply go to 'other os' from my PS3, and it boots straight into Zero Game and I can load my games straight from a list. No additional input is required. It's all controlled by the sixaxis/dualshock3. When I want to return to the PS3, I simply press the PS button button to quit back to the game selection, and then press the PS button again to get back to the PS3 GameOS.puke_face wrote:Niode wrote:I use it with Zerogame Project. I've got the older fat model. I'd need the slim to play the upcoming new release games. I've got a list that goes on for a while, but the one I'm most excited about is Red Dead Redemption.Niode wrote:There's no Linux on the Slim. You'd have to buy an older 'fat' model.

Ahh I see. Gotcha. Personally I'm not giving any money to Sony ever again. The company simply isn't worth supporting.puke_face wrote:I've got the older fat model. Agreed. Second time they've done this. One of the PSP's selling points was you could create your own homebrew for it. Sony pushed that as a selling point! Less than a year later they are on a crusade against it.Niode wrote:Ahh I see. Gotcha. Personally I'm not giving any money to Sony ever again. The web's first video game public library! http://videogameexperiment.com rents all games for free and sells them for less than Ebay and Amazon! Plus we take anything in on trade-in.
