Struggling to find enjoyment from gaming

i appreciate everyone's feedback. I'm just in a slump right now. between family, work, and our house, i have little time left for anything, let alone gaming. Maybe, i'll just put them away for a good while and come back to them in the future, or just go on a mad ebay video game buying spree/rampage like i always do to help me feel better........

I actually think I have more fun and appreciate games more at the age of 25 than I did as a kid or teen. The only thing that's declined for me is the "awe factor", which I used to often have, but it's significantly declined. And feeling awe from a game definitely adds to it. But games like Super Mario Galaxy, Mass Effect 2, Bioshock, Resistance 2, Mega man 9 and 10, etc, were all still incredibly fun and enjoyable for me to play. I don't think I could have appreciated the art, the effort, the design, the complexity of each back when I was younger in the same way I do now. But I also have less patience for repetitiveness.

Just a question, do you find yourself feeling less enjoyment from movies or books too? I wonder if it's a general decline in your enjoyment for entertainment, or if there is something in particular about games that's turning you off. If it's less enjoyment from all entertainment, I would say don't clean collection because the feelings may pass.

This happens to me once and a while but I always end up getting back into gaming. What you need is a break. Just do something else with your spare time, gaming will be waiting for you when you get back.

What I do when I'm feeling uninterested is buy a really good game. I usually have a few 5-star games I postpone buying, so I'll have something to look forward to eventually. I just recently bought Eternal Darkness, as I was bored with most every other game. For the same reason, I postponed buying the Chrono games and RE 4 for several years. I still haven't bought Super Metroid, played Jak 2, or bought Jak 3, they're ones I'm saving right now. It's nice to know that if you get too bored with games, there's something really good to bring back your interest.

Yes, don't do that. I regret it 90% of the time. Even if you think you won't play it ever again, if it's a good game, somewhere down the line, even if it's several years down the line, you'll want it back.

I believe three is the standard number. Never use two.. it's too hard to tell if it's an ellipse or a typo. Never use a lot.......... it looks wrong. It's good to have a standard...

This happens to me all the time. Right now though I'm basically a jobless hobo and I won't be studying until July. All of the sudden games seem fun again. I finished TimeShift on XBOX360 the other day (Great game!) and now I've moved on to COD4. I'm a few years behind XBOX360 games but there still fun and the graphics seem damn good to me.

It helps that I've been doing all my gaming on my friends awesome setup.

This happened to me when i reached the 200 game mark. I had far too many and would often struggle when trying to pick a game and then not play at all. What worked for me was downsizing. I sold everything but the Dreamcast and then told myself I could also have one handheld (DS). Now that I have more focus in my collection, its easier to pick a game, stick to that game and enjoy that game like the old days. I will eventually get another Saturn since it is my favorite console. My last two only left because I needed the money. Aside from that though, I am going to be a two console man for a while. At Least until I get settled somewhere (constant moving was another factor in selling).

i hear you. picking a game to play is a tedious task, and can't stand my back and forth attitude when it comes to picking a game to play. 99.99999999999% of my games i know i will never finish let alone play again, so i can't see the logic in playing them and keeping them around. I try to finish what i start, but when it comes to gaming, i rarely get more than 3-4 hours logged into a game. But then why am i possessed to keep adding to my collection? i can't figure myself out. It's like i'd rather read about the game, or view screenshots and listen to the soundtrack than play.

I'll sell off what i think i'll never play again, then sometime down the road, i'll want to play it again, and obsess(seriously) over it until i have said game again. Once i have it back, i'll toy with it for a week or so, then it sits collecting dust, never to be touched again.

i hate this cycle and want it to end, which is why i just might clean shop and try to pick up another hobby. don't know, i'm so at a loss for words and tired of battling with myself over it.

It sounds like you're having a mixture of problems there. One thing I see is that you seem to be wanting to find yourself. This is extremely common. You are unpleased with the way something is going in your life, so you are looking for change. Not even that as much as you seem unsettled and might be looking to branch out. There is nothing wrong with exploring new things, you just have to be willing to see it as a growing experience, not as an inconvenience. Like I said earlier, it sounds like you just need to step away from gaming for a while. Do something else that you think you might enjoy. If you are that worried about wanting to play the games you are thinking of selling in the future, then don't sell them. Put them in a box, in a place where they won't get damaged and try a different hobby that takes your mind away from gaming completely. After a year or two.. depending on how much you enjoy your other hobby (if you pick one) try gaming again. If it still doesn't feel the same, I'd say sell it, or keep it in the box. That happens to me often when i go back and play a classic or guilty pleasure from my collection. The reason i feel that way is because i have current gen games i havent finished yet. Also i believe we as gamers have been spoiled through the years with better graphics, controls, sound, etc. But ive sold my stuff before and you know what happened. One day years later i wanted to play it and i wouldnt rest until i got it back. So dont give up hope but just remember sometimes you just need a break.
