What Languages Can You Speak?

I can only speak English, I am trying to learn Japanese, the thing is I am into it, I just never get back to it.

When I was taking Spanish in high school I was working at a McDonald's at the time (and I still have nightmares about it). When a Hispanic guy bought the store I was working in, he brought on a lot of his Spanish speaking workers and hired a bunch of workers that didn't speak English.

So, taking Spanish in school and working in an environment where I heard and was forced to speak mostly Spanish helped me learn it pretty good. I was able to speak rudimentary, or elementary, or whatever word they use to described speaking languages.

Anyways, sad to say, I quit McDonald's and graduated high school. Now some years later and I have to struggle to remember a few words. I'm actually very upset about it, I would love to be fluent in Spanish. Oh well.

Was tought Irish Gaelic when I was a little kid by my mother. Though a dead language, apparently I picked it up faster than English and was technically my first language. Pretty cool eh?

Well, you know what they say...

If you speak 3 languages, you're trilingual. If you speak 2 languages you're bilingual. If you only speak 1 language, you're an American. Sadly, aside from a small Spanish vocabulary, that's me.

Monolingual sadly. Ive studied Spanish, Japanese, and Gaelic so I know some of each, but Ive yet to be in a position where I really needed to know them so they are mostly forgotten.

Like Ziggy I use to work in the food industry, and if you dont know Spanish you are SOL. Surprisingly most of the bigger hotels on the east coast of the US have alot of Eastern Europeans working in them so you pick up bits of Russian, Bulgarian, and Slovakian. I, like any good college student, learned enough of each to hit on the pretty girls working in the back of the house.

My Japanese is pretty up there, so I guess two. Korean and/or Spanish are next on my list.

I am in the process of learning Koine Greek, the language the New Testament was written in. It's tough, but enjoyable for the most part. One good thing that makes it easier to learn is that you only have to translate one way since translating from English to Koine Greek would be a pointless task.

I hate this language. Too many rules. As my Latvian(!) Attic Greek teacher said back in '99, "it really is the language from hell(as)". I now formally study Koine. Actually, I think I just hate formally studying languages. I much prefer to learn as I go, which is hard to do when you're on a deadline...

I've picked up a few random Polish words from some guys I worked with in construction a few years ago, as well as some random Russian from some drinking friends I had when I lived in Korea (had some good friends from Novosibirsk and Vladivostok and still talk to one of them). I had some Mongolian drinking friends as well, but I could barely pronounce that stuff. Mongolian is a really harsh sounding language. Fortunately, every Mongolian I've met could speak Mongolian, English, Russian and sometimes Korean and Chinese. They all write in natively in Cyrillic, which I found interesting.

Since my parents are Americans, my main language is English. I decided to study Japanese in high school cause I love games.

The Spanish language is permitted for me, but truly Latin I will always hold in my heart to reduce and encompass (I believe).

I'm a third year student, I can read better than I can write. Other than that, I'm quite proficient at English and that's about it.

That is neat. I plan on speaking Latin to my kids when they are growing up.

英語と日本語を話せる。　日本からのテレビゲームに夢中になっておかげでいつか日本語が覚えたいと思った。　日本語版のMMOを５年間続けてどんどん上手くなってた。そして食べながらアニメを見た。今は英語版のMMOをやっているけど食べる時はまだアニメを見る。　またいつか日本語のオンラインゲームを始めるかも知れない。

I can speak English and Japanese. I wanted to learned Japanese because I was obsessed with video games. I played Japanese versions of MMO's for 5 years and gradually improved. I also watched anime while I ate. Now I'm playing the English version of an MMO but I still watch anime when I eat. I might start playing another Japanese online game sometime.
