James Cameron's "Avatar" review

I thought the first two Spiderman flicks were pretty good, for what they were - summer comic movies. I think they work because they are pretty simple. The third movie, I thought, fell way off the mark with three different villians, and just general re-hash of stuff from the first two.

They work because they are straight-forward to the point of being simple, like Avatar. Some might call it shallow, but that might depend on POV. Something like Aliens or the two new Batman movies are not intended to be on that same level, they have a bit more complex characters and situations. It's similar to the difference between a blue-sky platformer like Sonic and an adventure/atmosphere platformer like Super Metroid. Very similar in concept and execution, but the subtle differences actually place them worlds apart.

And Super Metroid is the better of the two.

Have you watched Spider-Man or Spider-Man 2 recently? They've aged horribly. The sets look like they are made out of styrofoam, the acting is laughable at best, and plus, there is never a need for a Macy Gray cameo. Never.

And avatar wouldn't have been that bad if they left out the silly blue people. No, not these guys:
