Re: The 2009 World Series
Ah, man, didn't realize we had a World Series thread going or I woulda been here earlier! I'm a huge baseball fan, huge Cardinals fan. Started getting into baseball around 99-2000, didn't pay any attention growing up because my parents didn't watch sports, so I don't really have any taint from the strike in 94.
Of course I am rooting for the NL and the Phils. Cliff Lee absolutely killed it tonight. It really did look like he was going through a spring training game - didn't hardly break a sweat and never looked stressed. Some people love the longball and DH and all that, but I love seeing a pitcher dominate like that, too.
But the Yanks kinda looked lifeless, didn't they? In the 7th and 8th it looked like they were just letting stuff slide. They will be juiced on for Game 2, though. Girardi will chew them out and Pedro will be on the mound. I agree - this should be a great series.

Re: The 2009 World Series
Cardinals fan, eh? I grew up as a Mets fan and switched allegiance when shortly after I moved to Boston back in 89. One of my favorite baseball memories was Doc Gooden in his phenomenal '85 season (24-4, 1.53 era). I remember battling the Cardinals for a playoff spot but in the end, they were the better team. Fond memories of the greatest defensive shortstop of all time, Ozzie Smith.RadarScope1 wrote:Ah, man, didn't realize we had a World Series thread going or I woulda been here earlier! Hopefully Pedro can channel vintage '99 Pedro against the Yanks tonight. The 17K, 1 hitter gem he pitched against the Yanks was one of the best all time pitching performance. http://www.nytimes.com/1999/09/11/sports/baseball-1-hit-17-strikeouts-no-way-for-the-yankees.html

Re: The 2009 World Series
I actually believe this is going to be a very good world series because the Yankees have an opponent who can slug with them. Going into this the Phillies were being considered the underdog even though they won the WS last year. The $423.5 million the Yankees blew in the offseason with acquiring Mark Teixeira, CC Sabathia, and A.J. Burnett actually paid off.

He looks good but don't se him going deep. Nice for Philly that Lee went all the way yesterday. That's some thing people don't always think about with baseball: one thing always affects the next becaus it's a turn based game, and definitely so in a 7 game series.
Re: The 2009 World Series
I am pretty satisfied with Pedro's performance tonight (he just got pulled). Of course, I was a bit disappointed that he didn't go all 9, but then I realized that was an absurd expectation that was created by Lee's stellar performance. Lucky break on that Howard/Rollins/Pasada play. I don't care if it was a bad call, the umps are part of the game too, I will take it!

might be a rally in the works...?
Re: The 2009 World Series
Better be. Even if we lose, I am surprised at how quiet the crowd has been. Either the NY fans have become humble or a great deal of Philly fans made the trip up I95.dsheinem wrote:might be a rally in the works...?

Bah. Well great contest so far. Mariano Rivera and Pujols are the two most consistent players in the game today.
