... There's just certain stereotyping and non-sensical statements that get made by other posters that is certainly close-mindedness that makes me not want to even bother having a serious discussion about music as an artform.
It was directed at me, wasn't it?
For the record, I do understand that there are good hip hop artists out there, but my opinion of the genre as a whole won't change simply because of a select few artists. I appreciate music itself, and the focal point of rap music isn't the music but the vocal/lyrical content. Usually it's just some guy on a computer 'creating beats' with software specifically designed for that purpose. To prove my point, when's the last time you heard a rap song in an "odd" time signature like 5/4?
In other words, vocals don't interest me unless they're really good. I reserve the right to shit on music that calls itself music while having no focus on actual music. You read that correctly. I used the word music three times in that sentence because that's what hip hop is supposed to be. But, for the most part, it's not. It's usually just some guy reciting poetry on top of computer-generated drumbeats and sound effects.
Having said all that, wanna fight about it?
why, yes!
1) the "rap is not music" argument is tired, inaccurate, and should be reserved for midwestern redneck white kids on a playground.
2) if music/beats created on computers can't be considered real music, then please discount any form of electronica/dance music ever. most music utilizes computers in some way or another, i know you are not stupid and know this, but what's the difference really? it still takes a creative process, just like sitting at a piano, picking up a guitar or even a fucking french horn or something.
3) music is much more than melody or instrumentation. rhythm (in terms of beat and lyrical delivery) is the most prevalent aspect in most hip-hop, and it's the most basic aspect of pretty much all music. discounting hip hop as a whole for not having a well-known song in an odd time signature is pretty asinine, i'm sorry, i couldn't come up with a similar example, it's just asinine.
4) what defines "actual music" to you? i'm honestly curious. because if something that contains rhythm, melody, and harmony is not music, then i'm not exactly sure what is.
it feels like most people have a hard time saying "i just don't like hip hop that much" and try to justify it with these bullshit arguments that hold no water at all. it's really okay if you don't like hip hop that much. i hate most of the shit that lordofduct listens to but i didn't try and foolishly ascertain that electronica is a "lesser" form of music because they don't use "real" instruments or something.
like, seriously, i HATE skinny puppy. and kmfdm. shit annoys the hell out of me.
