Are things really that bad in the US that people need to rob? I've heard that Detroit now has a 50% unemployment rate, and I am sure there are many similar places, but I assume welfare and other help from the government would help people from doing something like this to feed their kids. I know it is sometimes hard to get on foodstamps or welfare, they denied me foodstamps once for some bs reasons.

Depending on the area, yes things are pretty bad. Like you pointed out, Detroit is in one of those bad areas partially because of the auto industry was the key economy of that area. Everything came crumbling down, plants closed, and everyone is out of work. I actually went there over last summer when stuff was going down, and it was not the prettiest place to be.

There was a local plant there that was going to be shut down when I was there, and thank god it was not because the people petitioned and showed them how much they need the plant there.

A lot of people don't realize how important the auto industry is to our country, and how deep-rooted it is. A lot of businesses depend on it for local income. I bet you've all noticed a mass of car dealerships disappeared overnight a few months ago.
