Honestly, I can't say much about Resident Evil Zero, as I've never played it(and I haven't gotten to play RE5 yet either). I would argue in the control's favor that, at the time of the game's creation, analog sticks hadn't yet found their way into mass use, so they were dealing with the PlayStation D-pad(or the Sega Saturn's), and it does take some getting used to, though with a little practice you can actually control yourself quite well.
As for ink ribbons, they are intended to rack up the tension of the game, and the first few times playing Resident Evils I burned through them pretty quick, though after you've gotten comfortable you'll start ending up with piles of them.
As far as preset camera angles, I can only give two reasons:
1) They add a certain cinematic quality to the gameplay. Silent Hill managed to do this even better than Resident Evil, and it does help to rack up tension when you can't see. Just wait until something steps in front of the camera, that's always fun.
2) Camera controls in general weren't very good at the time anyway, so having it fixed made a lot of sense, especially considering the narrow corridors. Survival horror starts getting away from it when it stops using prerendered backgrounds and goes fully 3D, but you'll still see it some even after that.
I suppose there are a couple of things to keep in mind that should help you immensely when trying to conserve ammunition and deal with the camera.
First off, audio cues are probably the most important thing to pay attention to in these games. Every kind of creature in Resident Evil makes a sound of some kind. Zombies moan and shuffle, dogs' claws click on the ground, crows caw, and other types of monsters will do things like thud their feet or breathe hard. When you walk into a new room, listen. And if you kill something and don't see any more monsters, get quiet and listen for something else. When it goes quiet, or all you hear is music, you've cleared the room, so you can stop jumping at shadows.
Also, while enemies do come back, they only do it at certain points, so if you clear a hallway of zombies it will probably stay clear for a while. Of course, what will be in there will likely be worse than just zombies, but you'll be getting heavier weapons to deal with those.
I personally never had an issue with Resident Evil's save system. I suppose some of it is that I don't save compulsively. Sometimes this has screwed me out of a lot of progress, but I've generally been good about quickly determining if I need to retreat or not.

If you are playing the wii port of the gamecube game (ntsc), and you also have access to the cheat program ocarina:

There are others, but they are all game breaking nonsense like infinite health or ammo.
Thanks, this could come handy if I get the gamecube version. So there's a guy selling resident evil 0, 1, 2, 3, 4 and veronica for gamecube for $80 and after little negotiation he's willing to sell for $60. Price searching vgpc, ebay and even on racketboy's gamecube most valuables veronica and 2 show up, should I consider this a great deal?

yeah- i'd say thats a deal. I picked up 1 and 2 alone for about 45.
just fyi though- i'm having problems getting the infinite ink ribbon to work. That could be my homebrew system though. I'm totally new with cheats.
I really prefer to play games with no codes or cheats or whatever. I feel like the limitation of the saves (as crappy as they are) is part of the challenge and experience of the game.
Anyway, I just killed the plant and got a rocket launcher and have been exploring the Armor Key rooms. Fucking made me jump big time when the zombies whose shadows you can see banging on the windows finally jump through the windows in the hallway leading to the plant room.
Sure the game is rather campy, but there are genuinely scary parts of it.

It turned out even better deal because he lived near and included a 1019 memory card and a carrying case for discs, but I'm going with the DS or Saturn version for now and leave the remake for later.

Yeah, it's my first time in TR (not counting me chiming in on the Castlevania one century too late) and its really a great deal of fun. Knowing that you are not alone combing through a creepy mansion/police station fighting zombies surely helps. I also think that RE was a very good choice, because it really is an important piece of videogame history and also plays a major role in my own nostalgic memories.
Is the ink ribbon system consistent in the series or even its spin-offs? I played RE 1-3 so far and they all had the ink ribbons. I have RE Outbreak, but I have not gotten very far and do not know if there are any typewriters.
On a maybe interesting side note, this save system was also introduced to Breath of Fire: Dragon Quarter. In a friggin' RPG! You use kind of a phone booth to save, needing a save coin item which comes in limited quantities. You also have some survival vibe in it, because if you use too much of Ryu's dragon power, the dragon within him bursts out and kills Ryu in the process. It's kind of similar of running out of ammo and being pretty much screwed in RE. Combining an RPG with the tension of a Resident Evil is a very interesting experiment and shows how important the creation of Resident Evil was and still is for Capcom.
