It should be fairly easy to replace the crystal. The only thing is that the crystal that comes on the game board is a 3-pin crystal. The one you'll be using as a replacement is a 2-pin crystal. That's why Marshallh (from the benheck forum) used the two caps. Beyond that bit of info though, I don't know. I only know this from what I've read in that benheck thread.

If you have never soldered before, I would suggest practicing on something of no value before giving it a try on the game. What I usually suggest to people is to first watch this video then get some perforated project board, such as this, to practice with. Get some cheap components (like a cheap IC, some resistors or caps) to solder onto the project board. Then practice desoldering them. That video will make soldering easy to get the hang of. Desoldering (like removing the stock crystal) is a little more tricky though. You can either use a desolder braid or a desoldering iron like this one.

If you don't use the caps... I really don't know what effect that would have. I don't know the difference between the 2-pin and 3-pin crystals. I would assume that they need to be there, it wont work with out them. And since they're all of about 50 cents each, you might as well just use them.

If you purchased all the components, I'm sure some one would be able to do it for you. I would suggest posting a thread in the BST section, name the thread title "WANTED: Soldering service (small job)" or something similar. Be sure to give all the details of the job (just link this thread if you'd like) and your location (at least the country). I'm sure some one will want to do it for you.

I could do it for you following that linked page and doing the crystal with the caps.

Sorry to necro. I'm having the same issue!
Just noticed the "tabs" were different. Cleaned my contacts... still black screen!
Was thinking of taking it apart but haven't yet since I'm not quite sure what to look for. Thoughts? Other things I could try?

There does seem to be a metal "clip" missing/broken but I'm not sure that affects play function at all....

Thanks.

Can you add pictures or describe a little better?

I haven't taken it apart yet so I can't show you what the inside looks like.

That's normal to only have one tab there for the games that have them.

Oh! Well that is good to know.
So is my best bet to just clean the contacts excessively for now?
Then if that doesn't work, take it apart and inspect the inside for condition?
(I do know how to solder. Girl power!)

Yeah, it's kinda weird. All my North American SNES carts that have them only have the one. The only time I've seen a cart have two is Star Ocean (Super Famicom) and I've always wondered if all SFC carts have two.

Those clips aren't even super imperative. It's just an extra ground.

I'd recommend taking it apart to clean it. When you open the cart up, it makes cleaning MUCH easier. It also allows you to do a much better job at cleaning too.
