I don't think it's too harsh at all. I DID buy it and I feel ripped off. It's like the guys who made it never played a shooter in their life. I wrote Renee at Hucast and told him how I felt. He apologized in a lengthy email.

It's awful and just because it's a new Dreamcast title doesn't mean it gets a pass for being a turd of a game.

I had watched Gagaman's video previously with the background off, but just watched a different video of someone playing it with the backgrounds on. Terrible design in that you couldn't tell what was foreground from background except for the different speed in parallax scrolling. Instead of fixing the design, they added the ability to turn it off. That means that a light bulb went off, but they didn't take the time to fix it properly by muting the colors or whatnot. It looks a bit disappointing that at least from what I've seen of the first leve, its just a complete R-type clone. The force ball and weapons looks the same and the first level had pincers as well. Homages are nice, but really the first R-type is more than 20 years old, do we really need something that appears to be* pretty much a candy colored straight clone released to retail? I'm surprised Irem lawyers haven't come knocking.

*granted I've only watched videos, not played it myself.

I'm guessing you haven't played a lot of obscure shooters? *cough*Pulstar*cough*

Oh I've played Pulstar, but that came out when R-Type was 8 years old, not 20. I'd say that we probably didn't need another clone at this point.

Of the indie Dreamcast shooters Last Hope Pink Bullets is my favorite purely because I can advance past one stage and they made a lot of improvements there. Dux actually felt a bit like a step backwards as it's more like the first Last Hope only the presentation while nice to look at is not very useful. When you blow up you barely even notice, the ship just kind of fades away quietly. It kind of feels unfinished despite all the delays the game had.

R-Type clones have been coming out since R-Type was new. Magic Dragon (this one is a pirate cart), Katakis, Pulstar (as already mentioned), Last Hope, Last Resort, etc. Of course, R-Type has been cloned numerous times (along with Gradius) in various Doujin shmups.

Wow. It seems like everybody hates this game. I've been wanting to get into shooters and was thinking about buying this game. Should I not?

If you are a shmup fanatic, then I'd say give the game a spin. If you are new to the genre, then avoid this and give something else a go. I recommend Ikaruga on XBLA or Bangai-o. Great gameplay and tons of spectacle. As a non-shmupper, I loved these games.

If you're wanting to get into shooters, try the Sega Genesis games. They're cheaper (which won't matter if you're emulating) and generally aren't as hard as some of the newer games.

Dux is a Great Shooter. I enjoy the game much more than some of the other shumps I play. In my opinion I like the tactical gameplay Dux offers. The game looks really good using VGA on a CRT Monitor. Best looking Independent game Ive seen for the DC

Some people do not like that the game does not allow you to not continue after your series of lives ends, or allow you to change the amount of lives to 1 (ship) to start the game, however--- I find no problem with this situation what so ever. The music is really good, the ship and enemy craft is great/colorful and pleasing to the eye. The Animation is nice clean and crisp too. Now days its very hard to see many nice colors on games without developers over using the color black. The contols are great and the gameplay difficulty does not seem to be a overly difficult. People have to realize this is a tactical-shooter shmup, not some bullet hell mayhem.

Its refreshing to see a variety of shmups out there to collect and play often. If there is one thing I love about a shmup is that they seem to never get old, its nice to be able to test your skills dodging bullet hell as far and long as you can before getting owned. Dux is a great very unique shmups experience. Im glad that this 3-man Independant team took the time and effort to provide more games for the Dreamcast. Dux has been really great for me and fun to see how much farther I can go the next run! :)
