So why do you retro-game?

Talk about just about anything else that is non-gaming here, but keep it clean

There are many reasons why I prefer retro games, but I think the main reason is that I have had enough of the newer ones. Most modern games are either an open world "adventure" game or an FPS. Whatever happened to 2D platformers, 2D fighters, or turn-based RPGs? What was so wrong with them that no one makes these games anymore?

For the most part they aren't 3D and they seem old.
Older. Not wiser.

I like to be challenged. New games aren't challenging and for the most part boring. Many developers trade challenge for accessability. I say screw accessability and learn how to play the fucking game. Try playing a game like Ninja Gaiden 3 Ship of Doom. See how fast people get their asses handed to them. Thats the kind of challenge that separates the men from the boys.

I never was a fan of turn based RPGs, but the 2d platformers and fighters were my favorite. I really never could get into 3d fighters, even though I have tried to. Just dont like it. 3d platformers can be good, but they are mostly generic and usually involve a lot of collecting pointless objects instead of getting from point A to point B without dying and before time runs out. Oh how I miss it.

I don't retro-game, I play games. I think gaming improperly present-oriented. If I read books from the 19th century, or even watch old movies, I'm not called a retro-reader or a retro-movie watcher. It should be the same with gaming.

Sure, the means by which games are played and the ways by which the stories are told change, but it is the same with books and movies. Some books may feel dated in language, but the stories some tell are timeless. Likewise, the effects used in cinema change, but the movies that make better use of them remain.

Games are the same: they might become technologically obsolete, but they need not be about ever better graphics and sound. If they captivate through gameplay and a unique use of the resources available to them, they'll remain timeless.

I think videogames are interesting creations. I like to play the older games because you can better see how games have evolved into what they are today. You can also see innovative ideas that for whatever reason stopped being put to good use. The history of gaming is interesting to me.

Unlike some of the people here, I don't hold a grudge against modern games. I like them too. A lot. I've been playing Mass Effect lately and it is one of the most breathtaking games I have ever played. I don't need big budget graphics, sound, and special effects to be happy though. I also like to boot up the old NES or SNES. I have also been backtracking into the classic games of systems I never had as a kid. Growing up, I was a Nintendo guy and never owned a Sega. Now I can see what I was missing out on back then.
