I don't think there's anything wrong with debating the strengths of each console in an intelligent way, but to blindly claim superiority of either console is absolutely stupid. The Sega vs. Nintendo debate is one that should immediately be left to one's opinion of what makes a better console - a console with a handful of 10's (SNES), or a console with bucketloads of 8's and 9's with a few 10's strewn about (Genesis). And while you may rank a game at an 8, someone else might think a 10 doesn't do it justice (see the Ecco the Dolphin franchise - a ranking is totally subjective to the player, as it seems unplayable to some and tailor-made for other players). Nintendo was much more intent on producing games that everyone would find equally enjoyable and addictive, hence why games like Super Metroid, Link to the Past, and Yoshi's Island, and Donkey Kong Country are unanimously given high scores. Games like Ecco the Dolphin, ToeJam & Earl, Ranger-X, Shining Force, and Phantasy Star are games which some people fanatically adore and others just can't get into - this type of game is abundant on the Genesis, so it might be viewed as unreliable, but there are so many games like this that you're assured to find at least a handful of games you absolutely love (that others may dislike). The Genesis also has some triple-A titles that are unanimously adored, such as Sonic the Hedgehog, Gunstar Heroes, Comix Zone, and Ristar. The Genesis has alot more classic games, but the Super Nintendo's fewer titles are generally regarded as classic-er.
Honestly, a gamer should be content with both, but myself, being an eclectic gamer, find myself favoring the Genesis overall because there are more quality games to play on it, (and they're fucking cheaper) but that doesn't mean I don't enjoy a quality game of Yoshi's Island now and again.

Yes now tell me all that shit plugged into each other doesn't make a Sega fan beam with pride!
Re: Sega Did what Nintendidn't
I like how he has the cleaning adapter, yet the genesis needs to be cleaned. Any reason for the duplicate Sonic and Knuckles?

Makes it more imposing in size!
Re: Sega Did what Nintendidn't
When the original NES came out, my family had a commodore 64 which was close graphically to the nes so I never really wanted one (though later I realized the nes was abit faster in processing and more powerful). By the time the NES became huge the Commodore Amiga had been released with its powerful 68000 processor and made the NES just seem not worth it, though all my friends who had one played it constantly.
My first game console was the Genesis which I bought at launch. It was the first system to offer what the Amiga had but for only $200 and had perfect arcade ports. For that reason I will always look back on the genesis fondly over the NES which was really just another 8 bit system with really good software.

Indeed, those engaged in console wars always forget that computers been ahead technically, and usually had better software.

Totally agree. And I think it's still the case muhahaha.Hatta wrote:Indeed, those engaged in console wars always forget that computers been ahead technically, and usually had better software.
I think that while SNES and Genesis were really close back then the Genesis has aged worse as most of SNES good games were RPGs which do not age so fast. The Genesis had really good arcade games like Golden Axe which age faster and eventually die when MAME appears.

.
I agree with most of this (although i would say that most sega 'classics' would rate lower than an 8 for myself), but i don't agree at all with comix zone or ristar being universally adored. I think they're decent games, but quite frankly i dont much enjoy either.
Streets of rage 2 though....
Also, even as a sega gamer through the whole 8 and 16 bit era, i must say, i tend to enjoy more nintendo games looking back. They seem to age better. Although i do disagree with the above comment about slow aging RPGs. i think the old RPGs are horribly dated nowadays
