Basically, everybody back then nerd-gasmed over how 3D it was. Granted, the graphics were about as detailed as a comic strip character more than half the time, but no one remembers that, they just remember the overdone CGI parts. Remember, this was a time when 3D was king, regardless of how much better 2D looked.
Now, most who sing the praises of FFVII mainly are getting off on the nostalgia factor. Either that, or they realize that RPGs really haven't offered that much that is better than FFVII. (This is less praise for FFVII and more a sign of just how bad RPGs have become lately.)
It just seems as every FFVII fanboy played it as their first RPG. People who were into RPGs before (or even those who started digging up RPGs once FFVII kicked them off) know better and generally consider it just a good game.
Oh yeah, I guess I should say I never really like Resident Evil as well. I always hated their absolutely dreadful control scheme, and the one time they got the control scheme right (RE4), they forget to include the horror aspect and it becomes nothing more than "House of the Dead: Off the Rails".
Also agreed. At first the games sucked because of their singularity. Then they make a new game that sucks because of its genericness.
I've only played RE2 on the N64. Most people seem to say it's the best in the series. It was OK, and I jumped a few times at the startling bits, but it really felt more like work than fun to me to finish it. I played Leon's first scenario, then I guess I played Claire's second scenario, but after beating the Leon part the Claire part just seemed repetitive. I honestly preferred the original Alone in the Dark from the early 90's. I thought it was much creepier, and it really called me back to play it some more.
Maybe the difference is that I was eighteen or nineteen when I played Alone in the Dark and I just played RE2 last year or so at the age of 25.

How fun would a fighting game be if you could easily breeze through it? I'll answer that for you: It wouldn't be. It would be boring, bland and repetitive.
When you start to accelerate at Street Fighter, you will see that every match is unique, and it is not repetitive. As well, you will notice that it is alot simpler than you once thought it was. You were just playing it the wrong way.

Someone mentioned the DMC games.. Granted their plots are beyond cheesy but I can't fault the gameplay much.
Glad to see others who don't consider Zelda to be the ultimate gaming experience..

And 3) I hate it/don't like it/couldn't bother to care for it. As you can guess people get very protective of their favourite little $50 plastic disk and feel the need to "rip me a new one"(As those crazy kids say nowadays ) and teach me all of the reasons why my opinion is factually wrong. Has this ever happened to you? If so, what was the game, and what are your reasons for not liking it?
My answer is in your avatar. I was really disappointed in Final Fantasy X.
I loved Final Fantasy I, II (USA), III (USA), VII, and VIII (never played IX). I bought Final Fantasy X as soon as it came out because I couldn't wait to see how the series looked on the PS2. I find Tidus' voice to be nasaly and grating. He's also whiny and obnoxious. I couldn't stand him and his chubby little face and its hard to get into a game when you don't like the main character. I therefore never bought that Yuna could be in love with him and all of their romance seemed so cliche and corny, especially the infamous laughing scene. Blitz ball was a boring distraction from the main quest. I thought the way you had to level up on the sphere grid was tedious. Wakka was a dumb jock friend/comic relief character that I couldn't relate with. The whole thing just didn't work for me despite the excellent graphics and sound and a reasonably good battle engine (I do like the conditional turn based battles; however, long animations on summons wear me out).
So there you have it. One of the most widely loved RPGs of all time is one I just don't like, and I'm a person that likes RPGs.
I haven't met a single person who didn't want to stab themselves in the ears when they heard Tidus's voice.
Also while were on the subject of JRPG's. I don't like Kingdom Hearts II all that much. Everything about the game feels half-assed in comparison to the shining beauty I played that was Kingdom Hearts. That was a great game. Kingdom Hearts II is an incredibly dumbed down sequel.
I feel old when talking to anyone my age yet too inexperienced to effectively talk to anyone older. Life is grand that way.
For me, it was Kingdom Hearts that I just couldn't get into. The magic felt useless, my partners felt useless, and some of the boss fights felt a little unfair by myself (I'm looking at you Cerebres). It felt much less RPGy than it did actiony.
And that Gummy ship thing. What the hell was that? I was piloting some kind of monstrocity (yay for max parts with no aesthetics) through an easy to nagivate starfield.

I never once wanted to play the damn game. Hated FPS style until this generation so that didn't help. The fact that everyone in my life was SHOCKED their #1 gamer didn't have it was fun. Love me some Xbox 360 and Xbox Live, you can keep the Halo.
Street Fighter 3 TS :
Ok, so I actually loved this game. Now it just pisses me off when elitist fighting game snobs won't give newer games a chance because 3:TS is just the best ever. There are better parry systems in other games for christs sake!

I beat FF7 about 7 times and loved the shit out of it. It wasn't my first RPG though. I still think it's leagues beyond any other FF title, mostly because it wasn't medieval themed.

hahaha. No I didn't. I was in a blind rage.
Still, good to point out that you shouldn't hate on Street Fighter, just cause it kicks your ass.

It's good that it's not medieval fantasy. It's bad that the non-medieval fantasy world doesn't really seem, to me, to actually make any sense. But I think it's pointless to criticize people who like it. Clearly there's something about it people are drawn to. I just am not one of those people.
