I'm intrigued to play VI from your opinions. I've just played VII which is my favorite, VIII, IX and about 20 hours into XII. Tactics would definetily get a vote but its a whole different thing.

It sounds like you started with the PSX titles. I would recommend you NOT get the FF Anthology for the PSX, since the load times are really bad and can ruin the experience. I'd recommend playing FF6 on either original SNES hardware, an emulator, or FF6 Advance on the GBA.

I like to push VI on people as well. My favorite. The sprites are just amazing! Sorry if this has been linked before, but I'd recommend all FF fans to take 2~3 hours and watch the videos here: http://www.gametrailers.com/game/4831.html make sure you watch in order! - spoilers abound however.

Yes did start with PSX, didn't have a snes. I'll make a note of playing the gba version. I watched the FF retrospectives they are worthwhile.

I enjoyed VII the most but that's mainly because it was my first I believe.

Final Fantasy VI is the one I would recommend to anyone remotely interested in RPG's that doesn't care about graphics (it's pretty 2d but some people just suck). The idea with the open-ended "second" world is genius and really asks for replays and speedruns. The story is fantastic, the characters are the best Square ever made and the battle-system (as long as you don't use Vanish + Doom) is well handled. The PSX port (FF Anthology in USA, FFVI stand-alone in PAL-country) includes some extras and stat-functions that really makes multiple playthroughs more enjoyable too.

I almost want to rate 1-6 and 7-present separately. The games are just so much different now, there's a lot more to them, makes it a little tough to compare newer ones with older ones.

III/VI was the best for me.

I had played I and II but never beaten them. But when I got my hands on III, there was just so much in there I had never seen in an RPG. All the sprites were really good, especially the monster sprites, and the characters actually had some emotion sprites! The first time a character wagged his finger (middle finger anyone?) at me, or had their eyes bugged out, it really was impressive at the time. You really got a feel for the characters, some were cocky, some were more reserved, some were just zany and with the exception of a few throw away characters, they all had continuing stories throughout the game.

Then throw in a good looking , but not overly complicated combat system, interesting weapon sprites, animated blocks, weapons that cast spells, lots of magic, desperation attacks, all the summons (seemed like a freaking ton at that time). This game was the one that hooked me on RPGs

plus, I would stack up the boss music for this game against any other. :)
Don't ask me about the price ;)

Ooh, it's a really hard choice between Final Fantasy X(PS2) and Final Fantasy VI Advance(GBA). FFVI has the most feeling of immersion of all the Final Fantasy games but FFX easily has the most fun gameplay of any Final Fantasy. Both have absolutely stunning graphics and a great story with cool characters and a fun world to explore. DON'T MAKE ME CHOOSE!

What's the difference between FFVI Advance and the original FFVI?

FFVI Advance is on the GBA. It also has some advanced features from the original.
