I have always been curious about people who dislike the FPS genre, because I honestly feel that it isn't the genre they dislike, it is the popular games in that genre that they dislike. Games like Bioshock, Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines, Half-Life 2, Portal etc. really take the genre into fun and interesting directions. Now, if you were to say, "I don't enjoy FPS games, because of motion sickness," fair enough. I know a few people who can't stand them visually because of that and I can not fault them.
I also feel like maybe people aren't experiencing FPS in the best way possible. Playing on a PC is a necessity... I'm sorry console enthusiasts, but the controller just does not cut it. It also helps to play the right games and talk to the right people about the games you are currently playing.
I know that I have never really given SHMUPS a shot, but when I did, talking to Dunpeal about them while I was playing and throwing ideas back and forth, asking questions and discussion techniques really helped me appreciate the genre a LOT more and enjoy it.

Re: Do You Have Any Unpopular Gaming Opinions?
I agree on the fps thing. While I don't jump at every fps I see, the core concept is fine. I can't see myself saying "No game that ever moves in a 3d space, is in first-person view, and has guns, I will not like"
Plus, all that can do is limit what you might enjoy in the future. Unless you have played every fps, may as well take the "I just haven't found the one for me yet" approach. This is me and rts, I have yet to find one that really clicks with me, but I still think the core gameplay that makes up an rts is fine and could make for a fun game to me.
The motion sickness thing really sucks though. My gf suffers from it, so I can't play any fps in front of her. Not just fps, but almost anything that is 3d. She had a hard time watching Psychonauts. Ironically, my mom suffered from the same, I couldn't even play Sonic in front of her without her getting dizzy. So, I feel for anyone that has this, and its a totally legit reason to avoid the genre. Usually, though, these people aren't the ones to say "I hate fps", because, from my experience, they actually want to be able to enjoy them, but just can't.

I used to think I hated modern FPS, then discovered Half-life... then Bioshock Infinite... now it's a genre I'm quite fond of.

I've been playing Borderlands w/ Ack and Fast and haven't found the 360 pad to be holding me back. Maybe pvp would feel different, but I'm happy to enjoy the genre this way.

I'd agree in general that, at this point, saying you don't like FPS is kind of like saying you don't like side scrollers or something. It doesn't account for the vast amount of variety in the genre.dunpeal2064 wrote:So, I feel for anyone that has this, and its a totally legit reason to avoid the genre. If motion sickness is the issue, or even if it isn't recognized as the problem, one can try to minimize or eliminate it.
As has been brought up before when this has been mentioned, a potential reason for this is the FoV not matching up with the viewing distance/monitor size. It's another point for PC versions of things, since it's usually something you can adjust there, whether within the game or with modding/tweaking config files.
Re: Do You Have Any Unpopular Gaming Opinions?
I agree with this. There is a lot of variety in FPS, well beyond the stereotype of the genre as simply "dudebros" playing Halo or Call of Duty. It used to be the stereotype was only WWII FPS, but nowadays those games have gotten much fewer and far between, as the modern military shooter grew in popularity. But even now, I'd say the heyday of FPS genre domination is dwindling, as the PC market move towards MOBA clones. Consoles will likely attempt to follow. That's not to say we won't have FPS(we still have shmups and fighting games well after their dominating years), we just won't see them get the same level of attention that they used to overall.dunpeal2064 wrote:I agree on the fps thing. But there are a lot of FPS out there in a variety of categories worth checking out, be it tactical(or realistic), more run-and-gun style, single player/multiplayer only, puzzle-based, thematic(WWII, modern military, fantasy, horror, etc.), RPG hybrid, stealth-based, so on and so forth.
Borderlands was designed with the controller in mind though. It's a very slow-paced game without much in the way that will limit it on a console, since it was built partly for them. Try something that is more PC-centric, like Unreal, Serious Sam, Rise of the Triad, or Team Fortress Classic, and you'll start to notice the limitations with sensitivity and the like.noiseredux wrote:I used to think I hated modern FPS, then discovered Half-life... then Bioshock Infinite... now it's a genre I'm quite fond of.

I can't see what made HL2 a good game. Granted, I only played for 3 hours or so, but I didn't find it very fun at all, so when I was penalized for breaking boxes to the point where I could not continue the game, I just stopped (basically, I needed to stack boxes to jump over a fence... ooooooops).
Anyway, I don't think I've played enough to really form an opinion on the game, but I'm also pretty sure it was a bad enough impression that I won't play it again regardless.

If we're counting portal as a fps(even though it's supposed to be a puzzle platformer) then that's the only series of fps's I like at all...don't know why but when i see all these others announced it's like "oh another fps game
". Though i will admit it's been awhile since I've attempted any but I think it eliminates some stuff I'd collect and possibly play by not getting them(since I'm trying to only get essentials and lost games unless I spot a great game that might be more expensive elsewhere).

Half-Life 2 is in some ways a tech demo for the physics engine and object manipulation. It's not without its problems(for example, the driving levels are too long for my taste), but very rarely were you put into a situation where destroying objects would halt your progress. There were other ways to get through whatever area you were in, even if it meant stacking objects you didn't think you could, like plastic bottles and newspapers.catnip wrote:I can't see what made HL2 a good game. But yeah...3 hours only to stop when you got frustrated at a puzzle that probably could have been solved through a little more exploration and critical thinking or reloading an autosave from a few minutes before...not a good way to form an opinion. I'd hate to see how you feel about games like Maniac Mansion and Monkey Island.
So why not try other puzzle-based FPS(even if the "gun" doesn't shoot bullets, it's still a weapon with which you interact with the environment. It's just less destructive)? Check out other puzzle-based FPS like The Ball, AntiChamber, Magrunner: Dark Pulse, Narbacular Drop, Q.U.B.E., Quantum Conundrum, or Vestige.darsparx wrote:If we're counting portal as a fps(even though it's supposed to be a puzzle platformer) then that's the only series of fps's I like at all...don't know why but when i see all these others announced it's like "oh another fps game". I looooooooove Maniac Mansion.Ack wrote: But yeah...3 hours only to stop when you got frustrated at a puzzle that probably could have been solved through a little more exploration and critical thinking or reloading an autosave from a few minutes before...not a good way to form an opinion. That said, I just hate puzzles. Which is why I can't do OoT, or... yeah, anything with a puzzle in it besides Portal. If I don't solve it within a few minutes, I'm done. I get no satisfaction from taking longer than a few minutes to solve such things in a video game - it just leads to needless frustration for me.
EDIT: Yeah, my autosave was fucked too, for some reason. Tried that - didn't work. That's when I uninstalled :p
