The SuperGrafx is VERY similar to the PC Engine, really. It ups the system's work RAM from 8 KiB to 32 KiB, adds a second HuC6270A video chip, and a controller to coordinate the two video chips. The VRAM is also doubled to make sure both video chips can stay fed with data. The CPU and audio capabilities are identical to the original PC Engine.
Basically, the additional video chip allows the system to display up to double the number of sprites on-screen and per-line and allows for a second background tile layer. The coordinator chip is there to combine the output from the two video chips. This is great for throwing up more stuff on the screen and reducing or eliminating flicker, but that also means that the same CPU at the same clock speed as the original PC Engine now has to do more work, including extra collision detection. So if the SuperGrafx had persisted, it wouldn't have meant that suddenly every game was going to be throwing around double the sprite load. The extra tiles and sprites would likely have been used more for special effects and larger objects as well as extra scrolling.
The SuperGrafx was really the worst successor console ever.

Re: Switch Discussion Thread
Does the Switch have virtual console or is it getting any? I missed on buying some games on the Wii and I don't have a US credit card and Wii Points cards are no where to be found for years now.
I believe one member here on the forums once said, a long time ago, if a console has 10 exclusive games its worth buying (I actually forgot the number I am guess-estimating). So it depends how many the DSi and New 3DS exclusives had.ElkinFencer10 wrote:Would you consider the DSi to be Nintendo's fifth distinct handheld separate from DS? Would the New 3DS be a distinct seventh handheld separate from the 3DS? Both have exclusive games that can't be played on the older hardware. I'd say, however, that like Bone said, the quantity of exclusive games rather than the mere existence of exclusive games make the biggest difference between a hardware revision and a proper successor. The DSi and New 3DS have games that can't be played on a base DS or 3DS, respectively, but those are in extremely small numbers, so I'd call those hardware revisions or half-step upgrades whereas the Game Boy Color had an enormous number of games - more than half its library IIRC - cannot be played on a regular Game Boy, making the Game Boy Color a true successor rather than half-step in my opinion.RCBH928 wrote:If it has exclusive games I woul say its a new console/successor since there are games that can only be played on this specific device.BoneSnapDeez wrote:^ The fact that the GBC had a large library of exclusive games incompatible with older harder makes it a proper successor, in my opinion.

Not really, at least, not yet. There are some classic games released digitally for it, but not under a "Virtual Console" banner and not from Nintendo. That said, the paid online service is supposed to bring with it some classic titles with expanded features. Super Mario Bros. 3, Balloon Fight, and Dr. Mario have been given as examples, but it's hard to tell yet how extensive the service will end up being.RCBH928 wrote:Does the Switch have virtual console or is it getting any? Re: Switch Discussion Thread
There are, to the best of my knowledge, 4 New 3DS exclusive games and 4 DSi exclusive games (again, keep in mind that I'm only counting games with a retail release).RCBH928 wrote:I believe one member here on the forums once said, a long time ago, if a console has 10 exclusive games its worth buying (I actually forgot the number I am guess-estimating). Re: Switch Discussion Thread
I'm cool with no VC. Just releasing everything under the eShop umbrella is fine.
The 3DS has the "regular" eShop games, DSiWare, and Virtual Console. What a mess.

Re: Switch Discussion Thread
I don't care how they brand it, but having Nintendo only IPs is not worth it to me simply because the games have probably been released in bundles, remasters, re-releases over the years. I was more looking into 3rd party games like "Zombies Ate My Neighbors" which were released for SNES and Genesis only and never again.isiolia wrote:Not really, at least, not yet. Re: Switch Discussion Thread
If they were never released again then there is probably an unresolved rights issue.
Re: Switch Discussion Thread
It was released for Wii Virtual Console, which I think the poster knows but was being confusing by saying they were never released again.
Re: Switch Discussion Thread
I think in videogames history there were many games never released again not for rights issue, but probably didn't see enough success to have another physical release in history. Now via emulation and software downloads its much more easier and possible.marurun wrote:If they were never released again then there is probably an unresolved rights issue.
I just brought it up as an example, when I said never released again I meant there are games that got many releases and hd remasters like Metal Gear Solid and GTA which you can find on multiple consoles over multiple geneartions in different collections and even on smartphones. Other games you probably had to own the original hardware to play them.ESauced wrote:It was released for Wii Virtual Console, which I think the poster knows but was being confusing by saying they were never released again.
As I mentioned earlier, although it got a VC release I can't buy it anymore because I don't have a US credit card and no Wii Points cards. Believe it or not, it will be easier to purchase the original cartridge.
