he eventually finds himself swept up in an interstellar war, where only his band can rock hard enough to save the Earth from menacing techno loving aliens. While he's also tempted constantly by forbidden fruit, which he may or may not have nibbled on.
That sounds like the greatest thing ever.
So that story is what we're lead to believe, if we don't take a moment to look deeper. You see, it's also possible that none of this ever happened, and Oji was just daydreaming the whole time.
I'm all for interesting stuff, but this actually makes the former less awesome. Normally "is it actually happening or just escapist fantasy?" is a good plot thinker. But when your supposed fantasy is "can you rock hard enough to save the Earth from menacing techno loving aliens" I say you run with that full steam.

Yeah, I see what you're saying. Well, the possibility that he was truly rocking the universe is equally plausible, versus he was just daydreaming it. Two different viewers could argue both points of view with equal verisimilitude indeed. The writers did a solid job of leaving that decision ultimately in the eye of the beholder. I personally side with "he was daydreaming and fantasizing about it all".

I found the 2 DVD newer Record of the Lodoss War remastered DVD collection today for $27. Looking online I found I did pretty nicely on that. I haven't seen it in over 10 years, so I have to crack into that just like I need to bust out that Robotech Macross Saga set I found for like $5-10 a month ago or so. I'm backlogging a lot of anime while religiously keeping up with DBZ, Parasyte, Dimension W and stuff like that on Toonami.

...and when I feel the kid has been nice long enough she and I will go through the Disney/Miyazaki 11 movie set from Amazon I got last month on my birthday too.

Good call.

I've shown my daughter just about every single Ghibli film. The only ones I think she hasn't seen yet are Only Yesterday, The Tale of the Princess Kaguya, and When Marnie Was There. (We might actually watch When Marnie Was There today.) I think her all time favorites were My Neighbor Totoro and Spirited Away.

When Marnie Was There | 2014 | 9/10

Just when I thought Ghibli had lost their magic touch, I get knocked out by another killer film from the famous studio. I was not prepared for how emotionally engaging this film would be, had me tearing up like a little bitch. You know its bad when your own daughter is making fun of you.

Image

When Marnie Was There is a story about a young foster girl, who is sent to the country side to recover from asthma attacks, brought on by city pollution. While there she meets someone who will forever change her life, in ways you cannot initially predict. Every time you think you know what this film is going to pull as its central plot element, the film switches gears and surprises you. I won't say anything else about the plot, because I don't want to ruin it for anyone.

Image

When Marne Was There is a beautiful film, in its artwork, direction, writing, and purpose. It gives you believable characters in a believable world, with a plot that will make you want to believe in the seemingly impossible. If it wasn't for a few pacing problems in the middle of the movie, I'd give this a 10/10. I loved When Marnie Was There. Films like this remind me why I ever fell in love with anime in the first place, and prove the medium isn't dead yet after all.

Of course, it never hurts to have quality source material:

Recently rewatched the Madoka films again. Always good. Also watched Erased, which was pretty enjoyable. The ending to Erased was a bit disappointing to me but still a solid series overall.

I'd love to see Marnie, don't think it's in that set though.

My girl loves Totoro. A couple weeks back leaving the mall this young woman was wearing a totoro backpack out the door and she started pointing and yelling totoro and squealing about it trying to talk to the girl. They had fun, wife was entirely confused. I think she'll love Kiki's Delivery Service and definitely Ponyo (loves little mermaid stuff.) I'll just have to roll through the stuff and see what works that isn't overly bloody (mononoke) so she doesn't get weird dreams.

I think the next Ghibli film your daughter ought to see is The Cat Returns. My daughter loved that one when she was young, and so did I actually.

Most Ghibli films are safe for little kids, but there's a few perhaps not. Princess Mononoke is as you said, quite bloody and violent at times. Grave of the Fireflies is heartbreaking and dark. Pom Poko is full of raccoons with giant testicles, literally. Other than those, the rest should be okay.

Oh that's intended, but I'm just not going to pay the $30-35 for it I see on blu ray when it pops up around here. I'll just have to scrape it up off ebay or elsewhere for less when the time comes. I personally enjoyed that one years ago when I had most the Ghibli movies on DVD.

Never been huge on Ghibli, but I realize I'm the only guy on the planet who'd say that. Nausica is probably my favorite though. Definitely seems the darkest and weirdest of Miyazaki's stuff. Princess Mononoke is awesome but could maybe have used some trimming. Castle in the Sky is great, but I don't remember too much. Howl's Moving Castle I saw in theaters so that was cool. Spirited Away I've never been able to finish and get really bored with.

I definitely want to go through them all chronologically someday.
