Nintendo Handheld Gaming Thread (Game Boy to DS)
Re: Nintendo Handheld Gaming Thread (Game Boy to DS)
Very cool. Too bad I didn't snap up CoD in time for TR, but I'm already busy with the other 2 games -- World At War also got a DS release! (I'm playing that this month on the PC.)

Since I know no one will do it I'll throw out not a FPS but a third person shooter that more or less plays like a FPS -- Brothers in Arms DS. Found this far more enjoyable than the COD games on there. World War II setting, good selection of terrain, maps, stages and even some tank play too (with destructible environments shockingly enough.) It plays quite well and is a pretty fun game, has an entertaining grenade tossing mechanic using the touch panel too which adds some much needed precision to that.
Can't recall if I brought it up earlier or not, but True Swing Golf, had for maybe $5 or so, fun game, uses the touch panel to swing away at the ball and it works well - game rewards you with things to buy in a shop to improve you too so the game won't get stale.

Agreed, Brothers in Arms DS is a very well put together and entertaining third person shooter. Very well programmed and designed. Totally recommended to action fans. I enjoyed it more than the original Brothers in Arms.Tanooki wrote:Brothers in Arms DS. Found this far more enjoyable than the COD games on there.

FYI...All of Renegade Kid's games are currently on sale in the eShop...including Dementium Remastered and Moon Chronicles. If you are into portable FPS games, you should pick them up.Exhuminator wrote:

Ever since Nintendo announced a Fire Emblem game for mobile and heard it was going the free to play route (still not confirmed I don't think), I wanted to revisit the GBA releases. Currently playing the first game on the GBA*, the one with Lyn and Eliwood. Really enjoying it thus far. On chapter 15 right now. After I'm done with this I will start up the second GBA game.

Just a friendly FYI, but that's not the first one on GBA. This was:casterofdreams wrote:Currently playing the first game on the GBA, the one with Lyn and Eliwood.

Great DS suggestions all. Hard to believe there's around/over a thousand games for it, when I've only got 22 of them (2%)

Ahh! I knew about the technically first game for the GBA but what I didn't know is that it was translated into English. This is good. It never made it the the US so we got the prequel as the first FE. I believe there were 6 FE games already in the series before Eliwood's story made it over here.Exhuminator wrote:Just a friendly FYI, but that's not the first one on GBA. Just be aware it exists, and that the game you're playing now is a prequel to it. AFAIK the third GBA FE (Sacred Stones) is not plot related to these two.

Got a purple GBC and some games for free the other day: Tetris DX, Pokemon Yellow, SMB Deluxe, and Toy Story 2. Haven't had a Game Boy in ages, this might get real fun.
Re: Nintendo Handheld Gaming Thread (Game Boy to DS)
Holy shit dude score, and yes it will be. If anything you nailed down 100s of hours of fun alone right there. Tetris is fairly timeless if you're into it even moderately so. SMB1 is what it is, very replayable, even on that format. Pokemon Yellow though, that you make of it what you do -- play the story over dozens of hours, or play it catch em all and piss hundreds.
If you want suggestions I know some smoking unique fun titles for the GBC only format that are a must among others.
I'll throw down this trifecta of gems as starters most often not known/suggested (and in order of awesome.)
- Warlocked
- Cannon Fodder
- Dragon's Lair
#1 that one is basically I kid you not Warcraft 1 portable, 12 stages, 2 sides, can play against others too. Very chatty, good sized maps, quite a few characters and things to build, never chugs or jacks up, not totally stupid AI either.
#2 Based on the amiga/dos and console titles of the same name, good overhead micro team combat soldiering game over ever growing maps, tombstones will pile up. Has some of the best FMV sequences oddly too for the system
#3 2bit color may seem low, but when you can take the laserdisc arcade game and shove the whole thing minus 8 moves on the Smithy and the shortening of some death animations you have to wonder how it got jammed into a GBC cart of all things.
By the way all can be had for like $10, they're cheap.
