Oof, that's a bit rough. Just tonight I finally went back and got the 5th star in Super Mario 3D Land (3DS). Kinda similar situation - you need to finish every level with both Mario & Luigi and get all gold flagpoles. It wasn't *too* bad since I had already collected all the Star Coins and gotten most of the flagpoles on my first run through as Mario, but if I had to play through all the stages 3 more times I would probably space it out over the next 3 years

On Sega Classics Collection?

I tried to take this one down late last night and just couldn't do it... Got bored and moved onto something else. Seems twice as long as regular Golden Axe? Do you remember how many levels there are?
It has the same levels as the Genesis version.

1. Hotline Miami (PS3)
2. Boulder Dash XL 3D (3DS)
3. Mirror's Edge (PS3)
4. Orcs & Elves (DS)
5. 3D Dot Game Heroes (PS3)

.....

3D Dot Game Heroes: "A winner is you, prfsnl_gmr!"

prfsnl_gmr: "No, 3D Dot Game Heroes, a winner is you! Let's go home."

(This game is great. It is a love letter to classic 8-bit adventures that plays like a seventh generation sequel to the original Legend of Zelda (NES). It can be just as challenging and cryptic as Nintendo's masterpiece, and since I did just about everything there is to do in the game, it took me just over 20 hours to roll the credits. Also, I loved it, and I highly recommend it to everyone.)

I never made it more then 3-4 dungeons into that game, which was my fault not the game's. I really should try to finish it off. Such a great title :)

6. Wizard Fire (Wii - Data East Arcade Classics)
7. Super Mario Land (Game Boy)
8. Burning Fight (PlayStation 2 - SNK Arcade Classics Vol. 1)
9. Magician Lord (PlayStation 2 - SNK Arcade Classics Vol. 1)
10. Metal Slug (PlayStation 2 - SNK Arcade Classics Vol. 1)
11. Sengoku (PlayStation 2 - SNK Arcade Classics Vol. 1)

14. Metal Slug 5 (PlayStation 2 - Metal Slug 4 & 5)
15. Metal Slug XX (PSP)
16. Phantasy Star Online (Dreamcast)
17. Smash TV (PlayStation 2 - Midway Arcade Treasures)
18. Total Carnage (Xbox - Midway Arcade Treasures 2)
19. Skyblazer (SNES)
20. Mega Man II (Game Boy)
21. The Monkey King: The Legend Begins (Wii)

Skyblazer always seems to come up in "SNES hidden gems" discussions. And for good reason - it's a fantastic action-platformer with a distinctively Middle Eastern art style and soundtrack. And compared to most platformers on the SNES, Skyblazer is much, much easier. Levels are brief and power-ups are extremely plentiful. Imagine a game with the graphics of Magician Lord, but the difficulty of Super Mario World. Check this one out.

Mega Man II was always one of my "travel games" as a kid, as I rarely played a Game Boy inside the house. While the Game Boy titles are not exact matches to their corresponding NES games, they are somewhat similar - Mega Man II takes concepts/levels/bosses from Mega Man 2 and Mega Man 3. Not much to say about this - it's a Mega Man game. If you dig the series you'll surely be into this one.

Not that you would ever know it, but The Monkey King: The Legend Begins is a sequel to Cloud Master. You know, the old arcade/SMS game. This Wii game is a very slow and leisurely shmup based on the Monkey King Chinese legends. It's pretty dull for the most part and becomes far too easy once you have a fully-powered up weapon. Recommended for shmup players looking for their first 1CC.

Agreed. It is one of those games that enjoyed more and more the further I got into it. (I started out playing a little at a time, but by the end I couldn't put it down.) My almost five-year-old daughter also loved watching me play the game - especially since I was playing as the pink-haired princess of the Dottano kingdom - and she would not let me beat any of the bosses without her in the room. She was incredibly pumped when I took down the Dark King, and had a "dance party" during the credits sequence.

If you want a challenge, I recommend the first Gameboy Mega Man game. I played through both Mega Man (GB) and Mega Man II (GB) last year, and while I walked through Mega Man II, clearing Mega Man gave me a very real sense of accomplishment.

 I actually 1CC'd that game the first time I played it. I would have felt spectacularly ripped-off if I had paid more than a couple dollars for it, but since it costs less than most iPhone games, I don't mind keeping it in my collection. Moreoever, the "tilt the Wiimote to speed up or slow down" mechanic is at least unique.

1. Blood II: The Nightmare Levels (PC)(FPS)
2. Metal Slug (MVS)(Run and Gun)
3. Clive Barker's Undying (PC)(FPS)
4. Judge Dredd: Dredd Vs. Death (PC)(FPS)
5. Lagoon (SNES)(RPG)
6. Tin Star (SNES)(Light Gun)
7. Cacoma Knight in Bizyland (SNES)(Puzzle)
8. World Heroes (MVS)(Fighting)
9. Mario's Early Years: Preschool Fun (SNES)(Edutainment)
10. Rival Turf! (SNES)(Beat 'Em Up)

Though I will refer to this as the Rushing Beat series, I'll specifically be referencing the NTSC-U names and ports of the series when discussing this.

I like the Rushing Beat series. However, I dislike Rival Turf!. It's the NTSC-U port of the first entry to a good series, but it suffers from hit detection issues, bland gameplay(partly due to the limit of 6 regular enemies with slight palette mods to make it 12), a butchered story(a problem that continues through the series in the US ports), sluggish and meaningless health bars, and some extremely repetitive and bland music. But it's not a total loss. There are some interesting ideas with special moves being based on the number of opponents you've beaten as opposed to using up your health, melee weapons don't wear out but allow players to still grab healing items and pull off throws, and Angry Mode, but overall the series improved considerably with the later games, Brawl Brothers and The Peace Keepers.

Rival Turf! is definitely a Rushing Beat game at its core though. Throwing your opponents is the name of the game, as jumpkicks and slides do miniscule damage. But enemies can knock you out of a throw animation, just as they can suddenly start hitting you while you are trying to combo them. Level design isn't nearly as interactive or as interesting as the later games, though there are some nice touches, such as riding the bus in the middle of the first level. There's also a lot of variance in boss design, and while some are wonderful(the final boss is a pretty cool fight), there are a couple that are time consuming or just plain poor. The Ice Man fight is every bit as long and as bland as the Dervish fight on the bridge in Peace Keepers, and having to fight him a second time is terrible, especially because it lasts much longer than the first.

Fans of beat 'em ups might be interested in this game, but the later ones are far better, and since the storyline was effectively gutted in this game, there's little point in going back to it. There are a lot more beat 'em ups on the SNES, many of which are far better. Rival Turf! is still better than Bebe's Kids though...

1. We Love Katamari (PS2)
2. Major Minor's Majestic Marching Band (Wii)
3. Mario and Luigi: Dream Team (3DS)
4. Petz: Wildlife Rescue (Wii) (Don't Ask)
5. Flow (PS3)
6. Journey (PS3)
7. Shenmue (DC) (5th completion)

Here is my list so far. Had some free time and really put a chunk of time in Mario and Luigi: Dream Team. It has been a long time since I have played a roughly 40 hours game, especially a JRPG. Was a lot of fun.

Also got through Shenmue for the billionth time as I have procured a PAL copy so I can transfer my data over to my PAL copy of Shenmue II. Working on that next.

#3 Uncharted 2 -

Terrible, just more of one. I thought they would have at least given something new to it. A leveling system would help a ton, oh well.....
