7 or 8 per year in just the rough parts? Wow, that's brutal. How big is the city? I hope you are ok.ElkinFencer10 wrote:It's a town with a high crime rate, and there are usually 7 or 8 murders per year in the rough parts of town, but this has been especially jarring for the community because this wasn't in one of the bad parts of town, and he was related either directly or indirectly to a lot of our students.

Most coax providers have fiber to the node, so within a mile of the average coax customer in a moderately dense area. Within ten miles of all customers.Jagosaurus wrote:@K-DB, without getting too technical, it's highly likely they aren't actually pulling fiber to your house if it goes through. There wont be buried glass in your yard. There is fiber node some where near & they'll break it off into copper. ATT for example has fiber in my neighborhood but it's a Cat5e cable infrastructure from house to house. Sure, my Comcast is coax/MoCA but my speeds are faster than the ATT "fiber" in the area. My coax hits Comcast fiber infrastructure eventually as well. Neither are guaranteed/SLA speeds (both "up to xx mbps"). Much of that is marketing. To my knowledge, true fiber to fiber end points are enterprise only or custom builds, in Houston any way. Bottom line, don't pay too much monthly for "fiber", especially if you're fronting construction cost.
@CRT, your tube TV passion inspires me!
And yes Glass to the house is rare, but it is becoming more commonplace. Comcast and TWC do it, Charter will be doing it soon. And ofcourse you have smaller players like WOW, or in my area United, which do best effort gig over glass to the home for $130ish a month. Sure your upload is still capped at something like 20, but you get a constant 900+ download on either. We are honestly looking at moving further out, since United will give me a sync gig over glass to my house for $750 a month, then I can run a data center out of my garage. They offer async gigs (100ish up) for much less.
Most telecoms will put an enterprise circuit into your house, if you are willing to pay all construction. At roughly 1k per ten feet, it is not common. Also you are looking at around 2k a month for a 100 meg connection.

It's ridiculously ghetto. On the bright side, no one really messes with you if you stay out of certain parts of town (Jesus Christ, you couldn't PAY me to go to Flint Hill), and I'm in a neighborhood that never has any violence, but yeah, even for Henderson, this was particularly distressing because it was in broad daylight and not in the bad part of town. Cops have been out in big numbers today and yesterday, though, so hopefully they'll make some arrests soon. The community has been shifting its attitude little by little over the past few years, and our crime rate has been steadily falling every year, so I'm hoping this is just a freak aberration.TSTR wrote:damn dude i didn't know henderson was so ghetto

All this talk prompted me to look it up.

Are you sure that you looked up Henderson and not Hendersonville? Hendersonville is a really nice town; Henderson looks like dilapidated shit (though, in fairness to Henderson, it looks worse than it is).Ack wrote:All this talk prompted me to look it up.

Ah, yup, sure am. Hendersonville looks nice. Henderson...looks like a lot of places in Alabama, admittedly, so it still has its nostalgic charms I suppose.

Henderson has its charms. It's not the greatest place to live, but I really am very content here, and I both grew up and went to college in a place like Hendersonville. The thing with Henderson is that its negatives are very visible - it LOOKS super duper shitty and run down, but there are still some really, really good people and great things here. It's no paradise, but I really don't mind living here at all.
Also, since I know a couple of yall live in surrounding counties, I'd love to host a North Carolina Racketboy Get Together sometime if yall are interested (since I live in one of the safe neighborhoods).

Is the "reminiscing" supposed to look like a limp weiner between the legs...or is that just unintended artistry?
