Was it Operation Condor?

This weekend I saw two films:

Inception: Lived up to the hype. Given that it seems everyone on this board has already seen it, I won't describe it, but it was thoroughly enjoyable.

A Serious Man: This is a relatively small-budget, personal project from the Coen Brother. I was interested and entertained while watching it, but by the end I did not know what to think. However, the more I think about it, the more I like it. As a black comedy, this is probably a lot more black than comical, but I did laugh out loud a couple of times. My current feeling is that this is a better film than Burn After Reading. I don't think that one has to be a Jew (I'm not) to appreciate this film, though I'm sure that it would help. I would be interested to read what a strong atheist thinks about the film, and whether he would find it satisfying, completely uninteresting, or something else.

The Coens have easily been my favorite film makers for a long time, and I felt this one was one of their weaker efforts. I probably agree that it was better than Burn After Reading, but not by much. Burn was also more fun/funny, if not as good of a film. My thoughts on A Serious Man are here.

As to the religious angle, I wouldn't say I am a strong atheist (more of an agnostic - ["An atheist without balls" - Colbert]), but I felt the film paralleled the spiritual journey that many people go through in life (including, I assume, the Coens). That is, the main character had obviously relied on faith to give him some meaning and structure to his life in the past, but when the serious shit hit the fan he found religion was just as lacking for answers as anywhere else he might turn. I felt the film didn't really condemn or praise religion - it was just a contemplative piece that took a very matter of fact/documentarian approach to the live of these particular people.

Yes, I actually read your review before posting my own. I didn't realize it was an Academy Award nominee until after I saw it, but I remembered that you had reviewed all of them earlier.

And yes, from your description you would not be a "strong atheist." But, then again, some people seem to see the terms "strong atheist" and "weak atheist" as somewhat controversial. Here is a description of the terms, for anyone who cares.

I agree that the film doesn't really come to any strong conclusions regarding religion in general or Judaism in particular. However, the influence of faith in this man's life is a pretty primary theme in the film. That's why I was curious about a perspective further removed from religious influence than my own. Thanks!

I saw Dinner for Schmucks yesterday. It was pretty funny although it would have been better if the main character Paul Rudd played was a little meaner like in the original French movie.
