I've thought that a few times, too. But then I come back to this little fun fact:

33 36 1 5466 PlayStation Final Fantasy VII

That's from Gamefaqs top 100 games list. Final Fantasy VII is currently in 33rd place, up from 36th, and has been on the list for 5466 consecutive days. Wow. I think we have people on this board who haven't even been alive that long. I don't know if people who love the game still are just really quiet about it or if the people who hate the game are just an incredibly vocal minority but 5466 days on Gamefaqs top 100 list is insane!

Personally, the only things I don't like about Final Fantasy VII have nothing to do with the game itself. I hate how Square treated the franchise after VII (IX being the brief exception) and I despise the cynical and lazy cash grab Square Enix went after with that slew of half-assed sequels, prequels, and I-don't-know-what-quels.

I tried to get into it but it suffered from that same open, empty world problem that kept me from liking Star Ocean 3 and Drakenguard. I'm not sure why, but Square Enix seems to love creating huge, generic environments where you spend more time running down an empty hallway than anything else.

Yeah, the environments weren't that game's strong suit. I thought it was a respectable action game played on "Hard" mode though.

I really enjoyed the combat in Crisis Core. It was fun to try and play the game skillfully and avoid taking damage, which is something you just can't do in most traditional rpgs. I liked that Crisis Core was largely skill based, not just all about stats and numbers. It was a nice show piece for the PSP's graphical capabilities too, like FF games on pretty much any console tend to be. But that random roulette thing was a really awkward part of the game that I had mixed feelings on. And a lot of the side mission stuff was really, really boring.

Yeah, the side missions (grinding for people who suck) are just there so S-E could release a challenging game. Some of the tougher boss monster side missions were fun though!

BTW, there was no random roulette. That was there to look cool, but the game keeps track of experience internally like any other RPG.

The random temporary stat boosts were way cool though. Especially the HP, MP, and AP boosts that would fill up past your current max until you exhausted them.

Isn't the dissenting minority always louder than the majority?

I am a pretty big fan of FF VII. I consider it to be among the best games in the franchise. Potential for my top 3 FF games depending on how I'm feeling at the time.

I also quite liked Crisis Core, but I wouldn't say it holds a candle to a major FF installment. I mean, it's good, and very addicting, but the combat is quite shallow and the story felt pretty fan-ficish. Still one of the better FF spin-offs, though. I will say that the ending of Crisis Core is one of the more powerful endings I've seen in a video game. Even though you know it's coming from the start (assuming you played VII), they still manage to make it hit you like a sack of bricks. Man, I wonder how people that didn't play FF VII or know about the story felt about that ending.
