Serious question, has an armed bystander ever stopped a shooting in the States?

One thing that really felt off to me was during the announcement that the death toll had been raised from 20 to 50 one of the 5 or so people to speak was a leader of the local Muslim community in Orlando. Which I completely understand since a lot of people instantly blame the Muslim community as a whole when stuff like this happens so usually someone comes up to denounce the shooting immediately. What bugged me though was while he praised the local police and asked for locals to assist them in anyway possible he at that time did not mention the victims or denounce the shooter he did however bitch at the media :P .

Yes it happens all the time. Really when you prevent a shooting from happening it doesn't get as much media attention :P .

Anyways there are plenty of articles on the issue if you google a bit.

A number of those were off-duty cops, who are trained in weapons use and, more importantly, how to identify civilians and instigators in a very chaotic situation. I do not think they should count as purely civilian bystanders for that last reason in-particular. The more chaotic a situation (like a crowded club), the more opportunity for fatal mistakes. Keep in mind also recently the "good samaritan" who killed a car-jacking victim while trying to shoot the car-jacker. You additionally have testimony from witnesses from the Gabby Giffords shooting and the Colorado theater shooting, both gun owners, who said that they did not have their weapons on them at the time but would have been hesitant to use them because the situation was very confusing and there was a high risk of injuring or killing the wrong person.

This doesn't mean that armed bystanders can't be of service, but that the situation has to be just right, because the confusion of a situation like many of these could easily lead to more lives lost rather than fewer. The last thing we need right now are armed vigilantes out on the prowl to prove that a "good guy" with a gun is really the answer to all of this.

The shooter's father has already told NBC that he thinks the shooting had nothing to do with religion, and there are reports the shooter had a personal aversion to homosexuals. Some of the other stuff I've seen reported about the shooter suggests to me that any religious involvement is just a troubled and intolerant individual looking for an explanation or excuse for his own feelings of disgust. If the shooter had been a white American born in the midwest (instead of a brown American born in New York) with these feelings, he could just as well have claimed extremist Christian justification for a shooting like this. The Westboro Baptist group have already praised this event as the will of God.

^ yes but there had been reports of isis calming it was and the fucktard called 911 before the shooting claiming isis. I keep reading the religion is against homosexuals and was infuriated by it being displayed, public affection, in front of his kids. What his dad said anyway.

He could've, but didn't, as he didn't have those connections. Many personal aversions to homosexuals often stem from a religious basis. If he was a christian who did it for those motivations, many would be denouncing that as well.

The shooter was likely a closet homosexual in denial, displacing self loathing by projecting his personal hatred towards strangers via bullets.

As for "do personal guns save other people's lives", there are countless reports showing this is true on the internet. Five minutes of Googling will return endless data supporting the fact.

I find it fascinating that this guy passed so many background checks. Pretty sure extra laws weren't going to stop him from getting a weapon. Even if they'd flagged this guy (with no prior criminal history), I have no doubt he'd have obtained a weapon illegally. Someone who's bent on this kind of carnage isn't going to let a silly little law stop them.

That Westboro "Baptist Church" claimed this is the "will of God" is completely unsurprising. Especially considering they're nowhere near mainstream Christian thought, and are a political action group posing as a church. They are disgusting human beings.

This wouldn't surprise me, actually. Although he apparently hated women and blacks as well. His dad is also all sorts of crazy.

Yep. They have saved lives not only with shots fired, but in many cases where shots weren't fired.

why do people have any reason to think the shooter was a "closet homosexual"?
