Complaining that fighting games show off playable characters in trailers seems really silly, it's like complaining that buildings collapse in a Call of Duty trailer.

The concept that your interest in a Smash Bros game is not reliant on the characters that it contains is an entirely foreign idea to me. The entire appeal of Smash Bros. is that we have iconic characters fighting each other on top of an easy to play fighting system. The characters matter the most.

RE X: I did a little reading and apparently one of the trailers had some sort of chat box?

If it turns out that X has some sort of multiplayer function I'd be more inclined to consider it. It looks like a game that would be more fun playing along with other people.

It does appear to have an online component of some sort. I just hope a single player RPG is still the primary focus.

I thought gameplay mattered the most. I am not complaining, I was just trying to express my thoughts that adding a character to a roster does not need to have its own headlines in blogs and their own little trailers featuring them

Look at this video:
5+ minutes video talking about 1 character in a game that has not even been out(not like its a strategy guide) . To me this is the definition of over-hyping, but everyone seems like they enjoy it and believe its big news so I am ok with it.

@BogusMeatFactory

Good then, more games like Splinter cell and Donkey Kong should extremely help the Wii U

Just building hype for the game, if every time they announce a character and release a trailer they are getting the Nintendo, Wii U and Smash Bros. brands slapped all over they internet, why wouldn't Nintendo, it would be dumb not to capitalism on it.

It also builds a sense of community around the game, letting people feel they are connecting with the developers and being told what is happening while it is happening, etc.

I thought this response piece to the common complaints against the WiiU was pretty fair.

Gameplay in a fighting game is entirely reliant on the characters. If you didn't notice, the Little Mac trailer actually shows a lot of his abilities off ... much more than just an announcement that the character is present.

I'm not worried at all. It's very easy to imagine how Xenoblade would have been with multiplayer itself, I figured this will be the same case. Somewhat of a simple option that doesn't really alter the main game itself. This is Monolith Soft we're talking and Takahashi has suggested in interviews this new X will have an even grander story again (he seems to pass off Xenoblade's story like it was nothing, which in his defense it is insanely simple compared to the past Xeno's, but the execution was still top notch!).

Xenoblade and this seem to have a bit of Monster Hunter / PSO influence in there I'd say. So you can probably party it up with people or not, but the epic cutscenes and story progression will still be there in spades I'm sure.

A lot of good points, especially the part about there not being a game worth owning on the PS4/Xbone at this point in time, yet people are still shelling out for them despite the fact that the Wii-U actually does have some decent titles. Zombi-U, Pikmin 3, and the new Mario come to mind. I still personally consider all this negatively surrounding the console to be overblown and something that will likely disappear in a year or two.

Some more wishy-washy logic from a person whom doesn't know what they're talking about, me:

I've had this inclination that
what we're seeing be put out on Wii U by Nintendo is not particularly the games the Wii U was designed for. They are good games, very good games even, but a lot of it feels like standard fare, stuff that is being made to fill a void in the library - which is a lesson they learned on Wii and 3DS - as opposed to being games that molded the development of the Wii U console.

New Super Mario Bros U, Luigi U, Super Mario 3D World, Mario Kart 8, Smash Bros., Wind Waker HD, etc. these are all games that, while good (or even great), are there to make people buy the system. Mario Kart is never again going to be "revolutionary", it's just going to be something fun. There's only so many ways you can do cart racing. Smash Bros. has the same issue. A new one is always good, but it's never going to change gaming again, in terms of how future games will be designed to play. That has already been done by those franchises. This stuff that exists is to make a critical mass library to get the system into hands, something Nintendo hasn't really done before.
I think their plan was
, because of the drought on Wii and 3DS Nintendo said, OK, we have these "big ones" that we have in mind, but instead of focusing on them from out the gate ... we need to build something to tide people over first. You saw a little bit of this on 3DS too with Ocarina of Time 3D and StarFox 64. On Wii U, Pikmin 3 is like a Wii remnant and Wind Waker HD appears to be something to feed gamers while they wait for the next Zelda ... because they're gonna have to wait.

If you think about this, that means that there are games that Nintendo has in mind which give an answer to the question of "Why Wii U?", and I think we'll start seeing them this year ... at least announced. Hopefully, by the time they come out, the critical mass library is high enough that people take a look at the system.
Historically, there always seems to be a Nintendo game you can point to
and say, "See? This is why they made that system." I think a problem on Wii U is ... we don't see it yet. But I think that in an effort to ensure a game library existed on the platform, Nintendo may have stabbed themselves in the process because now they don't have a conclusive "This is why" title, but that doesn't mean it doesn't exist. They only have what the other guys have ... which is a continuing bulk of games that are very good, but not unlike things you've seen before. For the image of Nintendo in game player's minds, this seems to be something that's held against them, with extreme prejudice.
I believe those games exist and I would be absolutely astonished if Nintendo had nothing up their sleeve that shows the worth of the system.
