Everyone seems to throw down for Masamune's overly loved Ghost in the Shell and endless spinoffs, but you know what I actually enjoyed more both in anime and manga -- Dominion Tank Police and also Black Magic. They're fantastic.

In all these years I've never seen Bubblegum Crisis or Evangelion, not really sure why.

Evangelion gets a lot of praise heaped upon it, but I found it kind of pretentious. The protagonist is a downright unlikable, whiny, annoying, obnoxious brat. Fans swear that Evengelion is "deep" and "symbolic". For a show that's supposedly so "deep," they spend a lot of time showing you pubescent girls in latex bodysuits.

I couldn't sit through it. I've never finished watching Eva.

I saw a few previews and pieces of those movies they recently (last 6mo) ran overnight for 2 weeks on Toonami but I couldn't motivate myself to watch them. That and watching the n64 game get played is about my history of the franchise. I've thumbed pieces of a few manga too, but never grabbed it.

And I forgot one, Parasite Maxim on Toonami is amazing, wish I had the manga it was based upon. I've seen it in pieces off and on for a good decade at second hand stores, but I haven't in awhile (good year+) now that I'd care to bother which sucks.

For reasons I can't comprehend, I somehow own the original series on DVD (stupid alcohol...) Totally worth your time, entertaining 80s cyberpunk type stuff

Be careful with this one. It's pretty damn bad and wonky 3D CGI.

I hate to be that guy, but I think you would appreciate and enjoy the Patlabor movies more if you watch the OVA or TV series first. But a lot of people still love Patlabor 2 regardless... I just think it enhances the experiences to know the characters so much better and to go through some funny ups and downs, then see how crazy things get during the ultra serious movies. Not to mention the entire series is available in BD now. It's pricey, but just saying you could download too. The whole series looks fantastic. The TV series is pretty goofy and episodic, it reminds me of Planetes if you ever saw that one. It's like really weird down to Earth meta stuff of some normal dudes doing their job, lol. Nothing else quite like it.

Anyways, here's some hype for your ears: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dbjshelGFeY

Patlabor 3 isn't canon. New characters, not directed by Oshii, etc. It's beyond bad and they were literally trying to do some kind of Godzilla plot with it. FYI Patlabor is about as realistic as it gets when it comes to mecha, so this nonsense made no sense.

I would say it's comparable to Jin-Roh with regard to that, though even then, the larger setup that's implied definitely crosses into science fiction.

Oh man, recently saw this one myself, pretty awesome stuff. Depressing as hell.

@Tanooki

I love GITS, so I can't agree with you about it being "overly loved". However, I believe that Evangelion is overrated. Actually I think Evangelion straight up sucks and has always sucked.

@Xeogred

Alright, I shall procure the Patlabor series and OVAs and watch this stuff in order of release.

What do you (or anyone reading) think about Armored Trooper Votoms?

I meant overly loved in relation to his other works as they're not worse. Not in an overly loved way some FF7 fanboy will say it's the best RPG series wide if not overall, it gets old. :)

Has anyone seen GATE? I've enjoyed what I've seen of season 1 and it's kinda interesting how they tie together the special fantasy realm and the real world. It's definitely an interesting concept for an anime.
