The Sky Crawlers needed like 20 minutes of mid fluff cut out. It also doesn't visually look at that great, when that was a staple in classic Oshii movies. It's not bad but definitely a shell compared to some of his other works. But either way if you're a fan of Oshii movies, you'll dig it.

I don't really care to keep up with anime movies. I'd have a hard time coming up with a big list of some that I like, and I would never take a movie version over a TV series instead. I'm just way more into the bigger full package of TV installments when it comes to anime.

If the final 90 minute episode of Gundam Unicorn counts that would be high on the list though. I'd probably put it above Char's Counterrattack, plus it's the perfect sendoff for the entire UC saga.

How about Redline? Fun for the animation alone. They used a lot of classic cel drawn techniques on it so I think it took like 10 years to make or something. lol

Of those, I've only seen TGWLTT and 5cm. Good job! I have research to do.

I usually stick to series as opposed to films since I like to have a little more to chew on. I have however seen The Sky Crawlers and King of Thorn. Sky Crawlers wasn't really my cup of tea it is a really really slow and gets bogged down in it's circular philosophy. I do however recommend King of Thorns it's a nice scifi/horror movie with plenty of action and a few nice plot twists I watched it on Hulu where it's up for free streaming with ads.

Edit:
Forgot Harlock Space Pirate if your into CGI eye candy check it out it's still up for streaming on Netflix and has both subbed and dubbed options.

Sky Crawlers was really good. It's slow, but brilliant, by Mamoru Oshii if you're familiar with his works.

Redline is my pick for the most "crowd pleasing" anime film from the past decade. It has intense action and some of the best 2D animation out there.

Sword of the Stranger reminds me of the kind of anime movie that would have been held up as an example of how amazing anime could be back in the 90s. Unfortunately it didn't get a lot of attention but it is a totally solid film.

Short Peace is an anthology film that's maybe a little inconsistent but is overall pretty great IMO.

There are also the Evangelion reboot films which IMO are solid (most people at least liked the first two). I've heard good things about the two recent Dragon Ball Z movies, Summer Wars, The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, The Princess and the Pilot, 5 Centimeters Per Second, Welcome to the Space Show, and Asura but I haven't seen any of those so I can't honestly recommend them!

Somehow I missed this post earlier, don't know how.

You mentioned Sky Crawlers and so did some others. I haven't seen it yet, but plan to. I mean I have the Wii game so I want to know what I'm getting into plot wise before I see it. I guess I've put it off for so long because it's a Mamoru Oshii work, and he tends to fall up his own ass to the detriment of his films.

I've seen REDLINE and it was glorious. I loved it.

Sword of the Stranger sounds like it'd be my kinda flic, gonna see it.

Have any of you guys seen Expelled from Paradise besides me? Am I only the only ecchi-mecha geek around here?

lol, I like Oshii more than Kon and Miyazaki.

Angel's Egg is amazing, maybe try that one out. It's kind of horror and has designs by Mr Final Fantasy Amano himself, which is awesome since he's rarely done anime character design work and it adds so much creepiness to it, it's crazy.

Anyways, Oshii is weird and Angel's Egg is the only movie of his I liked with my first viewing. And I'm not going to argue anyone into watching movies multiple times to truly get them haha. But I love GITS and Patlabor 2 more and more with each viewing.

Plus those Kenji Kawai soundtracks!

Sky Crawlers is simpler and more grounded in reality compared to his sci-fi stuff or whatever. So that might be a plus for some people.

I would say it's comparable to Jin-Roh with regard to that, though even then, the larger setup that's implied definitely crosses into science fiction.

In recent years I've been catching some newer stuff thanks to Toonami. Dimension W started last weekend which I DVR'd, never heard of it but I caught a preview ad a few days earlier and it turns out that one is pretty interesting and entertaining. Before that there was Kill la Kill which was solid too which had a nice one season start to complete end of story setup which was nice. I have checked other stuff and only one stood out I got bored with which was Michiko and Hatchin, just didn't get it or click with me, not sure but I gave it like a month (4 episodes.)

I saw a few posts up that Sky Crawlers mention, thanks to that excellent Wii game (the only good motion controller as a joystick flight game on Wii by a fat margin) tipped me off to watch the movie and it was really good.

It's crazy how fast they realesed/dubbed that series for the U.S. they must have started dubbing before or right after it started airing in Japan. It only started airing in Japan on January 10th this year and only 8 out of 12 episodes have been televised so far with episode 9 coming this week.

Anyone have any insight or opinions on the series Bubblegum Crisis? I want to watch it, but I would like some thoughts on if it is worth my time.

I'm not a fan but will acknowledge that it is worth watching. It's basically Blade Runner meets Streets of Fire but with more ladies in robo-armor? It's also a mess: don't expect an overarching storyline that ends.

On the other hand, I absolutely love the "AD Police Files" prequel-spinoff OVA series (not to be confused with the AD Police TV series). It's completely insane cyberpunk that's trying way too hard to be edgy and instead come across as just ridiculous.

The Bubblegum Crisis universe is kinda big:

1987-1991 | Bubblegum Crisis
I've seen this. I loved it. Classic 80s cyberpunk anime.

1990 | AD Police Files
I've seen this. It's decent.

1991 | Bubblegum Crash
I've seen this. I loved it. Classic 80s cyberpunk anime.

1993 | Scramble Wars
Never seen this.

1998-1999 | Bubblegum Crisis Tokyo 2040
I've seen this. It's decent. Not as good as the original series.

1999 | A.D. Police: To Protect and Serve
I've seen this. It's terrible.

2003 | Parasite Dolls
I've seen this. It's not very good, but not terrible.
