Hope you enjoy it as much as I did. I love the series (Yes, even the Wii one!)
I have played through Super Paper Mario and played a few hours worth of Thousand Year Door way back in the day. I really feel the similarities story-wise with Super Paper Mario and Paper Mario. I feel like I am playing a very similar game stylistically. Thousand Year Door did to a degree, but it felt a lot more grandiose and large scale.

Working on the second star in Paper Mario and having a lot of fun. I'm glad I got a good variety of party members in the very beginning. I hate finding dungeons with things that I could clearly do if I had the right party member, but can't touch it until near the end of the game. Boo for backtracking!

Kinda juggling three games right now which is something I typically never do.... Planescape: Torment, Betrayal at Krondor, and Lunar: Silver Star Story (Saturn version).

Krondor is one of the ugliest RPGs I can think of  I guess it's sort of ambitious from a technical stand point for a game released in 93 (Ultima Underworld is from the same year, much more 3D and yet much better looking though). Everything else about that game is fine though, I haven't quite played it that far but I've heard that the story is excellent.

The currently in development sequel for Torment on the other hand is looking great so far. Same thing with Project Eternity. I hope pre-rendered backdrops make a return to RPGs (though I don't mind some animated effects within the world, like that waterfall)

Also looking to buy: Ys III (TG-16 CD), Shadowrun (Genesis) Hori N64 mini pad and Slayer (3DO) in long box/just the long box

I loved Krondor as a kid, not sure how it would be today. One of the first games I played with speech.

I've been slowly reading through the copy of the Numenera sourcebook that came with my level of pledge for Torment. The setting really intrigues me.

Very nice looking. Personally though, I'd rather the norm not be to emulate the past styles like that. I mean, I put down a decent chunk of support for Torment and all too, but to me, with the technology there to insert the player into a more fully realized world, that's where the genre should aspire to go.

The graphics are by far the weakest part of the game. They look horrendous. Definitely ambitious, but '93 was still too early to have a great looking 3D game.

Everything else is awesome though. The music, the gameplay, the dungeons, the characters (well they look terrible - but again, graphics...).

It's easily one of my favorite WRPGs. I picked up the sequel a few months ago and it's pretty lackluster in comparison, unfortunately.

I'd say it would be, within the context of world/environment, since there's copious amounts of information that a 2D image would tend to lack. What's the ceiling look like? What's the other side of that table look like?

But, that's largely just a matter of semantics anyway.

To put it a different way, if we had holodeck technology, I'd rather see it used to put players into an environment than simulating a room with a nice tabletop model and miniatures just because "that's how classic simulations did it".

I think he was talking about the character graphics. Old 3D can be an acquired taste. But man, those live-action characters...

See, you can't blame the characters on the graphics. This was a case of putting people in terrible costumes. The actual graphics for the characters in the battle scenes are pretty good.
