So the guy in that comic is ignorant for assuming women find big muscly guys attractive... but the woman in the comic is justified assuming all women find lean guys with rosy cheeks and kissable lips attractive? Either way, it's a single person assuming the preferences of an entire group of varied people. It's still wrong either way.

Also isn't the reason sexual objectification is considered wrong typically because women who don't match the masses idea of sex appeal end up feeling hurt? In that same way, don't you think men could feel hurt by seeing the media always push the idea that we have to be muscular, but if a man is out of shape he'd likely feel inadequate the same way a woman who isn't the "ideal" of sexy might?

Over all, I agree with you that there is an imbalance. There should be more sexualized men in games and less sexualized women to make it a bit more fair. But the argument that men don't deal with similar problems is utter nonsense.

I don't think it's meant to say that exactly, no. The way it's written doesn't really imply that the same would be true for all women (she starts it out with saying "if I'm").

Both male and female characters are often unrealistic, but the logic behind it isn't necessarily the same. Even if you're not framing it in the "male power fantasy" angle (though it is), plenty of male characters are just not typically depicted in a way that prioritizes being attractive. They're designed to visually support what the character is supposed to be, often beyond what's realistic. Or they can simply be creatively designed.

That same logic doesn't necessarily apply to female characters, because giving them purposeful costumes or physiques may be contrary to making them attractive. Essentially, what she winds up doing to Batman. It makes as much sense as female characters fighting crime in lingerie.

(a different, more NSFW comic poking at that http://oglaf.com/dimorphism/ )

I find the idealized female form sexually attractive, and I don't mind being pandered to in that regard. I'll pay money for it in video games. If that makes me a bad person, an ignorant misogynist, or just a super evolved ape with an exploitable libido, I accept that.

At the same time, I've played and enjoyed many video games with non-sexualized female protagonists that I wholeheartedly related to. I never saw them naked, nor scantily clad, or put into contrived situations to insinuate sexual innuendo. I just considered them respectable human beings who's quest I enjoyed aiding. If that makes me a hypocrite, I accept that.

In light of both those concepts, I think there's room in the world of video games for both approaches to fictional females. With either approach depending on the intended demographic. Sex and violence sells. Emotionally resonant plots and memorable characters sell. I enjoy both on any given day. I guess I'm just human like that. Or maybe I'm just part of the "problem".

I accept that.

Context would matter too though. I mean, technically, all you'd need for that is art done like a Frazetta painting.
I CAN argue the point about muscly men and Franzetta though.

Haven't seen that comic, but it reminds me of The Hawkeye Initiative which I think is a nice visual aid about how different (and often ridiculous) some of the objectification of women is compared to their male counterparts.

Has anyone bought this other than me?:

From all I can tell Grand Kingdom was heavily influenced by Grand Knights History. Thing is, Grand Knights History was a Vanillaware developed titled, but Grand Kingdom was developed by Spike Chunsoft. But the only factual link I can find is both games were directed by Tomohiko Deguchi. While I really enjoyed aspects of GKH, its single player wasn't so great. From what I've read, GK has a much stronger single player campaign, so I went for it. (I mean the OST is by Basiscape... that alone is probably worth the price of admission.) Any of you other SRPG lovers jumped on this, or plan to?

I don't have it yet, but it looks interesting so I'll probably get it at some point. I do tend to be a little cautious of strategy games though since I'm pretty bad at strategy haha

Let me know how it is. I have a backlog of Strategy titles to get through already and thought that one looked generic, so I held off for now.

I'll try to pick it up eventually, but it's a bit down the priority list right now. Not sure if I'll go Vita or PS4.

Other Vita games I bought recently... Tearaway, Trillion, Gal*Gun, Shiren, EDF2... gonna get Leifthraser soon, will only be the THIRD time I've bought Odin Sphere. Gonna get Zero Time Dilemma soon too. I've still got quite a list of games to buy that have already released, let alone what's coming. The Vita might be going down, but not without a fight. 8)

Hell the PSP is still supposed to get one last physical USA release this year; Class of Heroes 3.
