Well thats my point. You can use those and still consider it beating an rpg.Hobie-wan wrote:Right, let's just take all those revives and life potions out of RPGs too. Re: Game collecting is not what it once was
I think 1cc vs. limited continues still falls under the notion of "I need to apply some skill to beat this". If you just fully credit feed through a game that restarts you where you die then there really isn't an accomplishment there; we could probably have given the game to Bone's kid and she'd make it through under those constraints. So I think the better thing to focus on is if you feel like you accomplished something through beating it, and if that means that you did it in 4 coins or less then that works. But you should be setting a limit for yourself when a game has unlimited continues and respawn at the point of death. If you get kicked back to level start then it means you still need to have a good run through every level, so if that takes you 200 continues total it's still an accomplishment.

Saying you only finished a game if you 1cc'ed is like saying you only beat Mortal Kombat if you did it without ever taking a single hit.
If people want to set personal achievements in games that's great, but don't push your made up definitions onto other peoples and take away from their sense of acheivment just to make yourself feel like you are some form of hardcore elite gamer from Mars. The games were not designed to be beaten in 1cc, anyone who says otherwise is just kidding themselves, what kind of business model would that have been.
My 2CC.

Re: Game collecting is not what it once was
There's a wealth of developers who are on record saying otherwise. Most shmups are designed to eat quarters on the way to an eventual 1cc. The goal of an arcade game is a high score, a 1cc is part of the path to accomplishing that.emwearz wrote:The games were not designed to be beaten in 1cc, anyone who says otherwise is just kidding themselves, what kind of business model would that have been.
You have to feed lots of quarters to learn how to do a 1cc. That's where money is made...moreso than by those who pop in a few bucks, see the credits, and call it a day.
Re: Game collecting is not what it once was
I stand corrected. I have only 1 CC'd and effectively beaten four shmups in my lifetime:
Astro Warrior for Sega Master System
Bomber Raid for Sega Master System
Twin Cobra for Sega Genesis
Raiden Trad for Sega Genesis
That was all on normal difficulty for Sega Genesis. Did I not beat those games though if I didn't play on the hardest setting? I'm curious as to the opinion of the board.
Strip me of my wins! Sanction me with your sanctions! Call Kotaku and tell them I didn't do what I said I did!
I quote Mr. Nolan Bushnell, "All the best games are easy to learn and difficult to master. They should reward the first quarter and the hundredth."
So if I like shmups, but now knowing that I cannot beat them, what right do they have to exist in my collection? I like having lasers and making them pew pew the evil planes. But if I'm never going to be able to "beat" them, why should I have them stare at me and mock my inability to beat them.

I can do this many times over.Exhuminator wrote:Can you tell me a specific shmup this phenomenon occurred in? And perhaps what one of those 41st hour revelations was? Serious question.mjmjr25 wrote:I've played shmups for 30-40 hours and in the 41st hour i'll learn something entirely new that I had no idea was in the game
I just discovered better scoring mechanics in Mushihimesama last night. I learned there is a 1up on stage 5.
In Dimahoo during SotM I learned there are hidden capcom symbols on various stages, including one in the first 30 seconds. It can only be accessed BY NOT SHOOTING certain enemies at the beginning of the stage, then releasing a power 8 shot on the first mid-size enemy. This is a HUGE point bonus and one of the items needed to increase your "x" multiplier. I'd probably played 50+ hours of Dimahoo before discovering this. There are still a few i've never seen and just don't know how to access yet - but they are there and are meant to be found.
For Together Retro last year, after hours and hours in Ikaruga, I discovered that if you let all of the black and white orbs cross over each other on the intro, you can kill all 18 white, then all 18 black. Then, when the next string of black comes, if you kill it as it enters the screen, another will appear, and another...before you enter stage 1. This gets your counter up to 23, instead of around 20 where many have it, or aroudn 2 or 3, where a casual gamer has it. Thus, making the extend much more attainable.

But what you are saying Mike is missing the point. We arent saying you cant sink hours into gameplay on shmups or RPGs. We were talking how long it takes to beat the games, not uncovering easter eggs or new strats.

Mike, what does the view of Mount Shmuplympus look like from your throne? I imagine it's pretty beautiful, with seas of pink bullets exploding our ships with unyielding tenacity. Do you feel any sense of remorse or guilt knowing our plight?! We will never be worthy!
