I came across the new Toons a while ago. I was looking through the tv guide and spotted Looney Toons. I thought, cool, haven't seen those in a while. Imagine my surprise. I figured I'd give it a shot, but I ended up changing the channel half way though the episode (it was something about the Grand Canyon). I didn't laugh once. It made me sadLuke wrote:The characters are off, the writing is off, the animation is...okay. But they throw in silly stuff like Taz was a mistreated pet. WB cartoons really don't need an origin story.BoringSupreez wrote: So, just plain old bad writing, I guess.
And the jokes. Ugh.

Re: Let's have a western animation thread
I saw a full episode and man, is it boring. Bugs doesn't outsmart anyone, Daffy is not zany nor existentially frustrated and Porky's model is kind of mediocre and stutters too much, he should only do it when it's funny.
The animation works, it's fluid and character's mouths do not flap but they don't do anything interesting with it. Which is a shame because they really could do it. I saw some clips and there's no reason not to include funny animation in them, it wouldn't have been more expensive. I enjoy watching it move, which is more than I can say of 99% of animation. (EDIT: Sometimes, it depends on the segment at hand)
In the end, were you to forget it's related to the Looney Tunes you will find it's just your average sitcom. Bugs is a poor straight man and Daffy is too generic in his funny guy role. The situations are also very predictable.
The Roadrunner shorts do not work well, they fail to build anticipation. The Coyote's plans are being presented as plans and not overdetailed plans that only a fanatic would think of. This is compounded by the poor pantonimie, the original shorts relied very heavily in it to describe the Coyote's mental state.
However their main flaw is that they present the Roadrunner as an adversary to the Coyote while in the original the Coyote is fighting himself.
I think there was potential but it doesn't work well as a Looney Tunes show and if you want a sitcom there's little reason to watch this over, say, How I met your Mother or whatever good sitcom is the rage now.

60's SPIDERMAN!!!
It's on Netflix Instant Streaming now. I've been watching an episode every other night. Very cheesy, in an excellent way.

Re: Let's have a western animation thread
I watched the whole series back in 2004 (way before it was a meme) on DVD from Netflix. I was kinda caught up in Spidermania after the first two new Spider-man movies. That show is so laughably cheap, it makes some of those 70's/80's Hanna Barbera shows look good. Good in a so-bad-it's-good way. Plus, as you showed, it makes for some hilarious internet pictures.scarper wrote:60's SPIDERMAN!!!It's on Netflix Instant Streaming now. I've been watching an episode every other night. What the.
Are these actual captures? The colorist makes Spidey look like a hobo. (I remember this series; it was right before he teamed up with Alicia and Bobby for "and Superfriends" run.)
My scheduling skills have died of dysentery; I hope to visit at least on a monthly basis.

I don't agree with the others. I don't enjoy the cheesiness. I think it's just plain bad. They also made a string of Marvel cartoons with other Marvel characters (different characters for each installment) that were even worse if you can believe it.pakopako wrote:Wait.scarper wrote:60's SPIDERMAN!!!... I'm also not a fan of Superfriends (since it was brought up), at least not until the 80s episodes where they were fighting Darkseid and his minions and it was starting to carry an actual continuity of sorts (and they dropped stupid characters like Marvin & Wendy and The Wonder Twins by then).

Re: Let's have a western animation thread
can anyone tell me what the time slot is for the new Thundercats show? I completely missed that it was airing already!
I watched the first four online and it looks pretty freaking sweet.

I guess the new Thundercats is aimed at the same young crowd as the original, which is fine. I just miss the days of cartoons for kids that could appeal to older folks like Gargoyles or Batman the Animated Series. I don't think I can get into this Thundercats reboot. Episode 4 was so cheesy it made me cringe with that silly forest people storyline.

Re: Let's have a western animation thread
The characters are ridiculous too. One episode is about Liono being impulsive and reckless while the others are trying to talk sense into him. Then the next episode, suddenly Tigra is inexplicably being the impulsive and reckless one while Liono is being sensible, which completely contradicts the previous episode. Then at the end of the episode they ALL decide to impulsive, dumb and reckless and take on a whole army head on
Ugh, these characters are inconsistent and stupid.
